“I was in position for the first 5K,” Werhane said, “but I fell asleep a little in the middle and wasn't where I needed to be at the end. At the start, I was able to follow some of the
Among Pac-10 runners Monday, Werhane ranked 16th overall, and only four other West Regional runners were ahead of him from non-Pac-10 schools.
Werhane qualified for the NCAA finale nine days ago in the NCAA West Regional at Stanford, Calif. (11/12) where he claimed the second of four automatic individual qualifying spots from the region based on his effort in the NCAA West Regional on the Stanford Golf Course (13th, 30:31).
“I would have liked to have finished higher, but I know I and the team are on the path to some great things,” Werhane said. “Every day in practice, Coach is putting us in position to come here as a team next year, and that's going to be an exciting thing. Our team is so young, so we're going to keep improving, and I'm looking forward to going back and sharing my experiences with them so they'll be that much more committed to being here next season.”
Looking back over his season, Werhane led the Ducks in their final two races of ?05, and ranked third in two other races and fourth in another in the first half of the campaign.
“Competing here as an individual is tough,”
In the overall men's individual race Monday, returning champion and Wisconsin senior Simon Bairu utilized a final kilometer surge to win by six seconds (29:15.9) over Iona's Richard Kiplagat (second, 29:21.9), junior Badger teammate Chris Solinsky (third, 29:27.8) and Liberty sophomore Josh McDougal (fourth, 29:32.6).
After three straight prior runner-up finishes, No. 1 Wisconsin won the team title with 37 points thanks to six finishers in the top 18 overall, and edged No. 2 Arkansas (second, 105) and No. 5 Notre Dame (third, 178).
In the women's race, Stanford utilized a strong second half surge to win their second women's team title with a score of 146 points and give first-year head coach Peter Tegen his third NCAA crown after he won titles at Wisconsin in 1984 and '85. Returning champion and No. 6 Colorado followed in second place with 181 points - four points ahead No. 1 Duke (third, 185).
In the individual race, Northern Arizona junior Johanna Nilsson surged away from her competition in the final kilometer to win the women's 6,000-meter race (19:33.9) over Columbia senior Caroline Bierbaum (second, 19:46.0), Notre Dame senior Stephanie Madia (third, 19:48.4) and Butler senior Victoria Mitchell (fourth, 19:50.4).
The Duck women just missed team and individual invites in the NCAA West Regional, but the Pac-10 was still well-represented as
Other All-American NCAA finishers Monday from the Pac- 10 included ASU senior Amy Hastings (13th, 20:09.0),
Monday's 255-runner NCAA men's and women's fields were composed of 18 teams ? the top two finishers from each of nine regionals held nationally on Saturday, Nov. 12 ? and 13 additional at-large teams. Each field also has 36 individual qualifiers - the top four individuals from each regional not on qualifying teams ? and two other at-large individuals from across the nation.

Werhane extended UO's NCAA cross country tradition Monday that dates back to 1963 when legendary coach Bill Bowerman's ?Men of Oregon' took second in their first collegiate cross country finale with 53 points ? one of 15 top-three UO finishes (four wins, seven runner-up honors, and four third-place finishes).
With the four men's team titles under former men's cross country head coach Bill Dellinger (1971-73-74-77), only Arkansas (11), UTEP (9) and Stanford (5) have won more since 1963, and Villanova has also won four in that span.
Individually, thanks to three NCAA titles by Steve Prefontaine (1970-71-73) and another by Alberto Salazar (1978), only one school has won more men's individual titles in that period (
On the women's side, Tom Heinonen guided UO harriers to 31 cross country All-America honors and 18 top-10 NCAA finishes among their 27 postseason appearances in his 28 seasons at the helm. The two-time NCAA Cross Country Coach of the Year debuted as the Duck women's harrier mentor in 1975 - coincidentally the first-ever AIAW harrier championship and six seasons before the introduction of the women's NCAA Cross Country Championships in 1981.
After Heinonen's retirement following the 2003 spring track season, recent Oregon coach Marnie Mason guided a pair of then-seniors to the collegiate finale the past two seasons ? Magdalena Sandoval in '03 (105th after an early race fall) and Laura Harmon (an All-America 31st in '04).
In their last team showings of 2005 at the West Regional at Stanford two weekends ago,, the No. 21-ranked UO women took fourth with 139 points, while the men were sixth in the nation's deepest regional with 153 points.
Individually in the NCAA West Regional, the UO women welcomed top-50 efforts from their five scorers ? junior Dana Buchanan (18th,
In the West Regional men's race, Werhane led UO for the second straight race (13th, 30:31). Sophomore Christopher Winter (19th, 30:48) also claimed top-25 All-West Region honors, and was followed by freshman Scott Wall (38th, 31:18), redshirt sophomore Carlos Trujillo (39th, 31:19), sophomore James Withers (44th, 31:24), freshman Jonathan Thomas (62nd, 31:45) and redshirt sophomore Michael McGrath (69th, 32:03). Freshman Galen Rupp ? the team's leader in two regular season races ? missed his second meet in two weeks because of a foot injury.
The 2005 season marked the first for Vin Lananna as the
Prior to that Lananna served 11 seasons as director of track and field and cross country at
In his prior stint as assistant athletic director and head coach at Dartmouth from 1980-1992, his men's cross country teams claimed six top-20 NCAA finishes ? including runner-up efforts in 1986 and '87 ? to go along with two top-20 women's placings, and 37 combined All-America honors in track and field and cross country.
In return for the two programs' success at the NCAA Championships, he was a combined four-time NCAA Coach of the Year honoree in men's and women's cross country and track and field.
The Duck cross country coaching staff also includes assistant coach Andy Powell and volunteer coach Maurica (Carlucci) Powell who were decorated former student-athletes at Stanford. Last year at Columbia, the pair worked with the Lions' women's distance program that took 13th in the 2004 NCAA Cross Country Championships and helped oversee several men's and women's individuals to regional and NCAA invites in track and field.
