Ducks Prove Their Point in Sweep of Dellinger
09/16/16 | Cross Country
EUGENE, Ore. – A courageous run by Bryan Fernandez and a solid pack finish by the Women of Oregon helped the Ducks sweep the 2016 Bill Dellinger Invitational Friday at Springfield Country Club.
Oregon's second ranked men won their season opener by a point over No. 22 Portland, 28-29. UC Davis was third with 101 points, while North Dakota State was fourth with 113.
In the women's race, the fourth-ranked Ducks won with 39 points, followed by a spirted effort from defending NAIA national champion Northwest Christian, which had 51 points. UC Davis was third with 75 while Oregon State placed fourth with 84.
How It Happened - Men: Oregon dedicated the race to Bryan Fernandez's father, Juan Fernandez who has been ill, and it was a late charge by Fernandez to pass the Pilots' Fabian Tomas that gave Oregon the one-point victory. Junior Sam Prakel won the race for the Ducks in 24:36.8 with sophomore Tanner Anderson just a hair behind in second. Fernandez, a junior from Santa Barbara, Calif., was a career-best fourth in 24:45.8, with junior Blake Haney 10th (25:05.7), senior Jake Leingang 11th (25:07.4) and freshman Mick Stanovsek 12th (25:21.0).
How It Happened - Women: Oregon placed five runners in the top 11 who all finished between nine seconds of each other to claim the 2016 Dellinger title. Junior Emma Abrahamson led the way on Friday by finishing fourth in 17:34.2. Senior Sam Nadel, making her first appearance as a Duck after transferring from Georgetown, took sixth in 17:36.4, while senior Maggie Schamedick was eighth in 17:39.1, senior Ashley Maton was ninth (17:42.8) and sophomore Jessica Hull was 11th in 17:43.0. Oregon State's Emily Weber became the first Beaver to win the Dellinger after she crossed the line in 17:26.2.
What It Means: Both of Oregon's defending men's and women's champions – Edward Cheserek and Alli Cash – sat out the 2016 Dellinger, so getting wins with those two on the sidelines was a good way to start the season. Prakel's excellent 2016 continued, with Anderson and Fernandez also strong in the early going as the team looks to add to the depth behind Cheserek. The women had a tight nine-second spread from their first to their fifth runner; that ability to run in a group was a key to the 2015 team's third place NCAA finish.
Odds and Ends: Stanovsek took an interesting path to the UO team. The Chadron, Ohio, native attended Oregon on his own in 2015-16, but was not a member of the UO team. He earned a spot on the varsity club and came through as Oregon's No. 6 runner on Friday…it was the men's fourth straight Dellinger title, and eight overall…the Duck women won for the second year in a row and seventh overall…the one point margin of victory was the closest in Dellinger history; the previous mark on the men's side was seven in both 2008 and 2013.
What's Next: Another week of fall training camp in Sunriver, Ore., followed by the Washington Invitational, Oct. 1, Seattle, Wash.
Quoteworthy: "It was a special race for (Fernandez); we actually dedicated the race to his father who's been sick. Bryan's kind of a favorite on our team and he really ran a great race. He kicked down some runners in the end. We're really happy with him," said associate head coach Andy Powell.
"We came in with a pretty conservative approach, we wanted to get a bunch of kids who haven't raced in a long time out there. I think Emma Abrahamson was great today she was really an improved cross country athlete from a year ago. She had a great summer so that was exciting to see," said assistant coach Maurica Powell.
