No. 7 Syracuse Utilizes Early Lead To Defeat Ducks
02/18/18 | Women's Lacrosse
WEST LINN, Ore. – The Oregon women's lacrosse team battled both the elements and the high-powered offense of No. 7 Syracuse Sunday afternoon, falling to the Orange 17-11 in front of a sold out crowd at West Linn High School.
How it Happened: The Ducks (1-1) found themselves in a hole early as Syracuse opened the game on a 4-0 scoring run. Senior Natalie Modly halted the Orange's run and put the Ducks on the board, scoring off a free position shot at the 20:07 mark.
After a goal from senior JoJo Hesketh brought the Ducks within three, 5-2, Syracuse rattled off three straight goals to put Oregon back at arm's length.
Down 12-4 with five and a half minutes left to play in the first half, senior Mariah Gatti and junior Shannon Williams scored back-to-back goals to close out the period with the Ducks trailing 12-6.
The duo continued their momentum in the second half as Gatti netted two goals in the opening minutes off passes from Cambi Cukar. Another goal, this time from Williams, cut Syracuse's lead down to 12-9 with 27 minutes still to play.
Both squads then proceeded to grind it out, picking up their defensive efforts, as it began to sleet, and then snow, throughout the rest of the game.
In a much tighter half, Syracuse was able to extend their lead scoring four straight goals over the next 13 minutes. Oregon and Syracuse combined for 17 turnovers in the second half, compared to nine in the first.
UO's scoreless drought was eventually snapped by senior Jill Zubillaga who recorded her second goal of the game to make it 16-10 with 7:33 still to play.
Williams added one more goal for the Ducks, but Syracuse was able to hold off Oregon to secure the win, 17-11.
Who Stood Out: In a return to her high school field, Gatti lit up the scoreboard with a team-high four goals off four shots … Williams continued her scoring ways netting three goals on the day … In another tremendous performance in the circle, sophomore Lexy Biller recorded 10 draw controls to tie the UO single-game record set by Carly O'Connell.
Opening Weekend: In a whirlwind start to the 2018 season, the Ducks currently have a .759 shots-on-goal percentage … Williams and Zubillaga have combined to score 13 of Oregon's 26 goals over the first two games … Biller was a dominant presence in the middle for UO recording 18 draw controls over the weekend.
Box Score: The Ducks didn't waste their opportunities, converting on 4-of-7 free position shot attempts … UO was perfect in clear attempts going 15-of-15 against Syracuse.
Up Next: The Ducks will have the next week off before hosting Canisius Monday, Feb. 26, at 1 p.m. PT.
