Ducks fall in series finale
03/11/18 | Baseball
How it Happened: UC Davis (4-9) struck first with a pair of runs in the top of the second. Ryan Hooper doubled to the right center gap to drive in the first run before Tanner Murray delivered an RBI single to make it 2-0.
Jakob Goldfarb answered for the Ducks, going yard for the fourth time this season with a solo shot to right-center in the bottom of the second, cutting into the Aggies' lead.
Hooper struck again in the third inning, driving in three with a bases loaded triple to right center, giving him four RBI on the day. Ryan Anderson tacked on another run for the Aggies with an RBI single in the fourth, making it 6-1.
The Ducks (11-4) climbed back into the game with a four-run fourth inning, trimming the deficit to just one. Goldfarb drove in his second run of the day with a sacrifice fly before Ray Soderman came through with a run-scoring single a batter later. Soderman came around to score on a wild pitch, making it 6-4, and Ryne Nelson drove in Jason Drees on an RBI groundout.
Gabe Matthews tied the game at six in the fifth inning, narrowly missing a home run with a sacrifice fly to deep right field.
The Aggies reclaimed the lead in the sixth, scoring a pair of runs off Oregon reliever Peyton Fuller. Caleb Van Blake's sacrifice fly to center field made it 7-6 and Guillermo Salazar scored on a wild pitch to put UC Davis ahead by two.
A Taylor Travess sacrifice fly in the eighth inning made it a one-run game but the Aggies got the run back in the top of the ninth.
Gabe Matthews and Goldfarb both singled with two outs in the ninth inning to bring the winning run to the plate, but Soderman grounded out to end it.
Who Stood Out: Parker Kelly dominated over three innings of relief, striking out six without giving up a hit. The junior struck out 13 batters over his six shutout innings of work in the series and allowed just one hit. Soderman led the way offensively, finishing 3-for-5 with a double, RBI and two runs scored. Goldfarb put together a great weekend at the plate, going 8-for-14 (.571) with five runs scored and three RBI. Matthews went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.
Quotable: Head coach George Horton:
On the loss…
"The good news is that we stayed in there and had chance to win or tie – I think that's because of our guys' toughness and confidence – but we can't give opportunities away and good teams will make you pay for that."
Jakob Goldfarb, Junior, Outfielder
On the offensive production…
"Things were really positive on the offensive side of things and we really never felt like we were out of that game. Even when we were down by five we felt good, we didn't waver and didn't panic."
Notable: Soderman recorded his third multi-hit game of the season and second three-hit game … Matthews has now reached base in all 15 games this season … He leads the team in multi-hit games with five … Kelly hasn't allowed a run in his 14 innings of work this season and has struck out 23 while walking just two.
On Deck: The Ducks host Gonzaga on Tuesday at 6 p.m. at PK Park before opening Pac-12 play at Arizona State on Friday.
