Ducks Fall in Series Finale at ASU
03/18/18 | Baseball
PHOENIX – Arizona State once again got out to an early lead, scoring six runs over the first five innings and Oregon couldn't answer in a 6-1 loss in the series finale at Phoenix Municipal Stadium Sunday.
How it Happened: For the third game in a row, the Sun Devils got on the board in the first inning plating one run off Oregon starter Kolby Somers (1-1). Gage Canning continued his hot weekend with a leadoff single and came around to score on a run-scoring single by Carter Aldrete.
Aldrete delivered his second RBI of the day with a two-out single in the third to make it 2-0. Taylor Lane followed one batter later with a run-scoring single of his own to drive in the second ASU run of the inning.
Daniel Patzlaff gave the Ducks (12-7, 0-3 Pac-12) their only run of the game, driving in Spencer Steer on a two-out RBI single in the top of the fourth, trimming the Sun Devils' lead to 3-1.
A squeeze bunt in the bottom of the fourth gave Arizona State (11-9, 3-0 Pac-12) a 4-1 lead before Gage Workman and Alika Williams delivered back-to-back two-out hits to plate a pair in the fifth.
Sun Devils' starter Eli Lingos (3-1) kept the Ducks off balance all game at the plate. Lingos went 7.2 innings and gave up just one run on five hits while striking out four.
Notable: Steer has hit safely in five straight games after going 1-for-3 … He has also reached base in the last 15 games … Kasser recorded his 42nd career multi-hit game, passing Aaron Payne (2011-14) for seventh-most in a career at Oregon … He now leads the team with seven multiple-hit games … Kasser drew his 62nd career walk, moving him into a tie for eighth most in program history … The Ducks were swept in a road conference series for the first time since dropping three at UCLA in 2016.
On Deck: Oregon will open the conference home slate with a three-game series against California beginning Friday at 6 p.m.
