Goldfarb, Kasser Pace Ducks to Doubleheader Sweep
03/24/18 | Baseball
Eugene, Ore. – Jakob Goldfarb and Kyle Kasser combined for 11 hits, seven runs and three RBI to lead Oregon to a doubleheader sweep over California on Saturday at PK Park. The Ducks won game one 8-5 before winning game two 7-2 to claim the Pac-12 Conference series against the Bears.
Kasser finished the doubleheader 6-for-9 with three runs scored and an RBI, while Goldfarb went 5-for-9 with two runs scored and four RBI.
Game 1: Oregon 8, California 5
Kasser went 4-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI, while Matt Mercer (3-1) and Parker Kelly combined to hold California to just three earned runs in the win.
How it happened in game one: Oregon scored six runs in the first three innings and then held off a California rally with two runs in the eighth to pick up the Ducks' first Pac-12 win of the season.
Kasser got the Ducks going early with a leadoff single in the first before scoring when Cal third baseman Sam Wezniak dropped a Goldfarb pop fly with two outs to give Oregon (14-7, 2-3 Pac-12) the lead. After the error extended the inning, Ray Soderman delivered a two-RBI infield single that scored both Gabe Matthews and Goldfarb.
Oregon added two runs in the second. Ryne Nelson led off the inning with a single and came around to score on Kasser's second hit of the game. Jonny DeLuca picked up an RBI scoring Kasser with a sacrifice fly.
The Ducks made it 6-0 in the third. With runners at the corners and two outs, Nelson intentionally got in a rundown after trying to steal second allowing Soderman to score from third before Nelson was tagged out to end the inning.
California (12-9, 0-5 Pac-12) cut the lead to 6-5 with three runs in the sixth and two more in the eighth, but the Ducks answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth. Goldfarb and Soderman started the rally with back-to-back singles to open the inning. Taylor Travess drove in Goldfarb with a sacrifice fly and Soderman came around to score on a DeLuca single.
Mercer and Kelly combined to contain a potent California offense despite some shaky defense behind them. Mercer (3-1) picked up the win allowing three runs, two earned, on seven hits with eight strikeouts and just two walks. Kelly got his first career save giving up two runs, one earned on two hits in three innings with three strikeouts and no walks.
Game One Notes: Soderman recorded his third three-hit game of the season and second career multi-RBI game … DeLuca turned in his fifth multi-hit game of the season … Nelson had his fourth multi-hit game of the season … Mercer made his 26th career start moving him into a tie for eighth most in school history with Madison Boer (2009-11) … He has struck out 25 batters over 17.2 innings pitched over his last three starts … Mercer has given the Ducks a quality start in five of his six appearances … Kelly matched his career-high for innings pitched while picking up his first career save … Spencer Steer extended his reached-base streak to 16 games.
Game 2: Oregon 7, California 2
Goldfarb went 4-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBI, while Kasser added two hits and a run scored to help the Ducks sweep the doubleheader. All-American closer Kenyon Yovan (1-1) made his first career start picking up the win while allowing just one run on five hits in five innings with four strikeouts and three walks.
How it happened in game two: After falling behind 1-0 in the first, Oregon rallied with runs in the third, fourth, sixth, seventh and eighth innings to build a 7-1 lead.
Braden Stutzman sparked the Ducks' offense with a one-out double in the third inning. After moving to third on a Kasser single, he scored on a DeLuca sacrifice fly to tie the game.
Oregon took the lead in the fourth. Goldfarb led off the inning with a triple and scored on a single by Jason Drees. The Ducks added to the lead with a pair of runs in both the sixth and seventh. Daniel Patzlaff doubled home Goldfarb, who led off the inning with a single, and then came around to score on an infield single by Stutzman.
In the seventh, Kasser singled and moved to third on a Gabe Matthews double. Goldfarb singled with one out to drive in both runners and put the Ducks ahead 6-2. Oregon tacked on a run in the eighth on a DeLuca groundout before Cal scored a run in the ninth to make it 7-2.
Game Two Notes: Goldfarb set a career-high with his four hits … Stutzman turned in his first multi-hit performance of the season and second of his career … Drees has now hit safely in his last five games … Acuna matched his career-long for a relief outing, throwing three scoreless out of the bullpen … Steer had his streak of 64 consecutive starts snapped.

On sweeping the doubleheader…
"That's hard to do. Winning a doubleheader against any opponent is difficult. And then obviously we have great respect for Cal. I think we had some unfortunate things happen on defense where they crushed some balls, but outfield play all day today was spectacular."
On Kasser moving into the career top-10 hits list...
"I'm going to see if we can get a fifth year of playing time from him. He's a pretty special player and a pretty special kid. To be honest he didn't play very well at third base when he moved over there, and I'm going to take the bullet there. He played there a lot last year and he's played all over the place. Maybe we are putting too much on his shoulders to ask him without a lot of experience."
Duck Doubleheader Notes: Kasser moved into 10th on Oregon's all-time hits list with 147 … He recorded his team-leading eighth and ninth multi-hit games … Kasser is now batting a team-high .363 … Goldfarb is second on the team with a .356 batting average … The Ducks' two catchers, Soderman and Stutzman, combined to go 5-for-8 with three RBI and three runs scored … DeLuca had his first career multiple-RBI games, driving in two in each game … Oregon matched a season-high for hits as a team, recording 12 in both games.
On deck: Oregon and Cal will play the series finale Sunday with first pitch set for 12 p.m. at PK Park. Kolby Somers (1-1, 3.86) will get the ball for the Ducks while the Bears will counter with Matt Ladrech (1-3, 5.70).
Kasser finished the doubleheader 6-for-9 with three runs scored and an RBI, while Goldfarb went 5-for-9 with two runs scored and four RBI.
