Ducks Drop Series Finale
03/25/18 | Baseball
Eugene, Ore. – California jumped out to an early lead and then held off an Oregon rally to win 5-3 and salvage the final game of the Pac-12 Conference series at PK Park on Sunday.
How it happened: Cal jumped out to an early lead scoring two runs in the top of the second inning against Oregon starter Kolby Somers. Tanner Dodson led off the inning with a base hit before scoring from first on a Jonah Davis double. Sam Wezniak knocked in Davis with a single to put the Golden Bears up 2-0.
Cal (13-9, 1-5 Pac-12) added to the lead with a three-run inning in the top of the fifth. After a base hit and an error put two runners on with two outs, Andrew Vaughn hit a three-run home run, his 12th, to give the Bears a 5-0 lead.
Oregon (14-8, 2-4 Pac-12) got on the board in the sixth. Pinch-hitter Taylor Travess led off the inning with a hit, moved to second on a bunt single by Kyle Kasser, went to third on a Jonny DeLuca ground out and scored on a Spencer Steer ground out.
Oregon added a pair of runs in the bottom of the ninth off Dodson, who moved from center field to the mound in the sixth. Pinch-hitter Kenyon Yovan drove in Jakob Goldfarb and Daniel Patzlaff with a two-out double, but Dodson got Jason Drees to fly out to center field to end the game.
Quotable: George Horton, Head Coach
On today's loss...
"Their left-hander pitched better than our starter did. Kolby [Somers] was a little out of character. It seemed like he couldn't get into a rhythm and execute his pitches. I think coach (Jason) Dietrich is kind of searching for what he could use, and he'd throw a good change and then miss a few. It didn't seem like he had a good feel today. [Cal] took advantage of everything we gave them. We gave away a lot of things at the plate that we shouldn't have."
On attempting a sweep...
"It's called baseball. Every day you have to tee it up. I told them what the scoreboard said today. In the Pac-12 you have to respect your opponent enough to know that they're going to come out on Sunday, what I like to call, attitude day. That's their first victory in conference play. They're tired of losing. As nice and hard as it is to win two games against a Pac-12 opponent, I don't think we were competitive enough today."
Duck notes: Travess is 3-for-6 as a pinch hitter this season … Steer returned to the lineup after missing game two of Saturday's doubleheader after he was hit by a pitch in the hand in game one … Somers (1-2), who took the loss, pitched a season-high 5.2 innings … Goldfarb extended his reached base streak to 12 games … Kasser, who was 1-for-3 in the game, batted .583 (7-for-12) with three runs scored in the series … Goldfarb hit .462 (6-for-13) in the series … DeLuca led Oregon with four RBI in the series.
On deck: Oregon will host San Francisco in a non-conference game on Monday at 1 p.m. at PK Park.
