Ducks offense struggles in loss
03/26/18 | Baseball
Eugene, Ore. – Oregon stranded 10 runners, including six in scoring position, in 5-1 loss to San Francisco in a non-league game at PK Park on Monday afternoon.
How it happened: San Francisco jumped out to an early lead scoring a run in the first inning against Oregon starter Brett Walker. Ross Puskarich delivered a two-out RBI double scoring Jonathan Allen, who singled to lead off the game.
The Dons (16-8) added to the lead scoring three runs in the seventh and one in the eighth. In the seventh, James Acuna loaded the bases giving up a hit to the first batter he faced, a walk to the next hitter before allowing the third hitter to reach on a fielder's choice on a sacrifice bunt attempt. A bases loaded walk gave USF a 2-0 lead, before RBI singles by Riley Helland and Ross Puskarich made it 4-0. Hellend added another RBI single in the eighth to put USF up 5-0.
Oregon (14-9) cut into the lead with a run in the eighth while getting the tying run to the plate, but a Daniel Patzlaff pop out and a Jonny DuLuca fly out ended the Ducks' threat. Freshman Alex Andranovich drove in the Oregon run with a bases loaded walk scoring Jakob Goldfarb.

On how to get off to a better start...
"If I had the answer, I would get them off to a good start. They were trying to get up off the deck and I feel like yesterday was kind of a lackluster effort, mentally and physically. I think our guys were poised for a good effort and wanted to punch back and do well today. We were a little bit ahead of things. The barrel was not staying through the ball. We didn't hit a lot of balls hard and we didn't execute, and they did."
On if the defense improved from yesterday...
"Yes. [Jason] Drees made a very nice play and Daniel Patzlaff with that play in the hole early. He hadn't been playing a lot of shortstop, but that was a spectacular play. I thought we complemented the pitching with good defense. We just have to figure out a way to get back on the confident side, offensively."
On playing four-straight games...
"It's a bit of a challenge. You don't have quite as much adrenaline or excitement as you do on a Friday, but it's baseball. Baseball is played frequently. These guys are used to playing every day in the summer and so forth. It wasn't a case of us being worn out or tired or anything. We just didn't play very well, unfortunately."
Duck notes: Goldfarb went 2-for-4 and scored a run … It was his eight multi-hit game of the season, while extending his hitting streak to six games … Kenyon Yovan went 2-for-4 in the game … It was his second multi-hit game of the season … Oregon used nine pitchers including Zack Noll and Isaiah Stolp for the first time this season … Noll pitched a scoreless second, while Stolp through a scoreless third … Walker (0-1) got the start and took the loss allowing a run on two hits in one inning pitched … Oregon's pitchers combined to strike out 13 batters, including three each by Jesse Hobaica and Ryne Nelson … Taylor Travess made his first career start in center field, while Jason Drees made his first career start in the outfield in left.
On deck: Oregon hits the road for a three-game series at Stanford starting Thursday. First pitch is at 6:05 on Thursday and Friday and at 1:05 p.m. on Saturday. San Francisco will host Oregon next Monday at 3 p.m.
