Ducks in Second After 36 Holes

EUGENE, Ore. – Oregon completed the first two rounds of the Duck Invitational at 12-over par and in a tie for second place amid what turned out to be tough scoring conditions on a chilly day at Eugene Country Club Monday.
Norman Xiong finished the day 4 under through 36 holes and is one shot off the individual lead in a tie for second. The Ducks as a team shot 5 over in round one before going 7 over in the second round.
How it Happened – Round One: Xiong turned in a bogey free 4-under 67 in the opening round and held a one-shot lead in the individual race. He began his day with five consecutive pars before birdies on on the par-5 sixth and the par-4 ninth put him at 2 under at the turn. Xiong birdied the par-4 14th and 17th holes to finish with a 2-under 35 coming in.
Ryan Gronlund turned in a 3-over par round of 74, shooting a 3-over 37 going out and an even-par 37 on the back nine. Edwin Yi got off to a hot start, going 3 under through five holes before struggling on the second nine to shoot a 3-over 74.
Donald Kay also finished with a 3-over par 74 while fellow freshman Thomas Mulligan shot an 8-over 79. Teddy Oitzman led the way for the individuals, shooting a 5-over 76.
Round Two: Gronlund led the way in round two, shooting a 3-under 68 to get back to even for the tournament. He opened with a bogey-free 2-under 32 on the front nine with birdies on holes one and four. Gronlund's only bogey came on the par-3 12th but he bounced right back with an eagle on hole 13.
Xiong opened with a 1-under 33 on the front nine, making three birdies and two bogeys including birdie on the par-3 seventh when he hit his tee shot to within four feet. He made bogeys on 13 and 14 before getting a shot back with a birdie on the par-5 16th to finish even for the round.
Yi shot a 3-over 74 while Kay and Mulligan each turned in a 7-over 78. Playing as individuals, Marcel Boet shot a season-best 2-over 73 while Kevin Geniza also shot a 73.
