Trio of Ducks combine to shutout FAU
03/04/18 | Baseball
EUGENE, Ore. – James Acuna pitched six shutout innings while Parker Kelly and Kenyon Yovan combined for three scoreless innings of relief to lead Oregon to a 4-0 win over FAU Sunday at PK Park.
How it Happened: Acuna (1-0) picked up his first win of the season, setting a new career-high with six innings pitched while striking out three and walking none. The sophomore did a good job of working out of trouble, holding the Owls to 0-for-5 hitting with runners in scoring position and stranding five runners.
The Ducks (7-3) finally got on the board with a pair of runs in the sixth inning. Spencer Steer drove in Evan Williams, who singled to lead off the inning, with a sacrifice fly to left field making it 1-0. Gabe Matthews followed a batter later with an RBI single scoring Kyle Kasser.
Another two-run inning in the seventh added to the Oregon lead and made it 4-0. Jonny DeLuca scored Williams with a sacrifice fly and Steer picked up his second RBI of the game on a single, scoring Kasser.
Yovan issued back-to-back walks to start the ninth, but Jakob Goldfarb made a spectacular diving play in right-center field to save a couple of runs. Yovan got the next two batters on a groundout and a strikeout to strand both runners and preserve the shutout.
Steer Turns in Solid Week: Steer went 7-for-15 in the four games this week with two doubles and five RBI. He turned in two multiple-hit games with three against Seattle on Tuesday and two Saturday against FAU. He also drove in a multiple runs in two games with three against Seattle and two against FAU on Sunday. The third baseman also made a number of stellar defensive plays in Friday's win over the Owls.
Notable: Acuna turned in his first career quality start with his six shutout innings … Yovan has now finished 25 games in his career, just three behind Jake Reed (2012-14) for sixth all-time at Oregon … Steer turned in his team-leading fourth multiple-RBI game of the season and 12th of his career … Matthews has reached base in all 10 games this season … Matthews also recorded his fourth multi-hit game of the season and 16th of his career … Oregon pitching held FAU to 0-for-9 with runners in scoring position.
Monday game time change: Monday's first pitch against FAU has been moved to 4 p.m.
On Deck: Oregon will look to clinch the series with FAU (8-3) Monday with first pitch set for 4 p.m. at PK Park. Cullen Kafka (1-0, 7.20) will get the ball for the Ducks while the Owls will counter with Nick Prather (0-1, 7.36).
