Xiong Tops Haskins Award Watch List, Named Ben Hogan Award Semifinalist
04/12/18 | Men's Golf
Sophomore Norman Xiong was named the leader in the race for the Fred Haskins Award, given annually to the top men's collegiate golfer, on the latest update to the watch list Thursday. He was also selected as one of 10 semifinalists for the Ben Hogan Award, also awarded to the most outstanding collegiate golfer.
The Canyon Lake, Calif. native has been on fire of late, winning three consecutive tournaments to set new program-records for career wins with six, and single-season victories with five.
Xiong picked up two victories in one week, winning at the Duck Invitational on March 27 and again at The Goodwin March 31. He earned medalist honors at the Western Intercollegiate in dramatic fashion, making birdie on the third playoff hole after hitting his approach shot to within a foot.
In the fall, Xiong secured a share of the individual title at the season-opening Rod Myers Invitational before coming from behind to win at the Nike Collegiate Invitational in October.
Oregon has now had a player named a semifinalist for the Hogan Award each of the last three years, with Aaron Wise being selected in 2016 and Wyndham Clark in 2017.
Three finalists for the Ben Hogan Award will be announced May 2 with the winner being selected May 21. The winner of the Haskins Award will be announced following the conclusion of the NCAA Tournament.
