Ducks lose opener 2-1 at Washington
04/13/18 | Baseball
Seattle, Wash. – Matt Mercer allowed just two runs on six hits in 7.2 innings but it wasn't enough for Oregon as the Ducks dropped a 2-1 decision to Washington in Pac-12 Conference play at Husky Ballpark on Friday.
How it happened: Washington (16-14, 7-3 Pac-12) scored all the runs it would need in the bottom of the first inning. Mason Cerrillo scored on a wild pitch after walking to lead off the inning, moving to second on a sacrifice bunt and advancing to third on a Nick Kahle single. Willie MacIver drove in Kahle to make it 2-0.
Oregon (18-14, 5-8 Pac-12) answered in the top of the second with a run on a Gabe Matthews solo home run to cut the lead in half, but that was all the damage the Ducks would do. After the home run, the Ducks put runners in scoring position later in the second inning, as well as in the third, fifth, sixth and eighth innings, but couldn't get a clutch hit to score the tying run.
Duck notes: Matthews went 3-for-3 with home run, two doubles and a hit-by-pitch … It was Matthew's second three-hit game of the season and his seventh multi-hit game … The home run was the third of the season and the sixth of his career … Mercer took the loss to drop to 4-3 on the season … The outing was the second longest of Mercer's career … He tossed 8.1 at Washington State last season … Joe DeMers, Washington's scheduled Saturday starter, pitched the final inning (12 pitches) to get the save.
On deck: Oregon and Washington play game two of their series Saturday at 2 p.m. The game will be televised on the Pac-12 Network.
