Win At USF Caps Road Trip
04/02/18 | Baseball
Oregon returned home Monday night after winning 5-2 at San Francisco, capping a trip that began with a win at No. 3 Stanford on Thursday.
SAN FRANCISCO — James Acuna pitched four shutout innings and the UO offense manufactured a couple of runs with timely hitting in the sixth inning Monday, helping the Oregon baseball team beat San Francisco, 5-2, at Benedetti Diamond on the campus of USF.
The Ducks (16-11) headed home after a 2-2 road trip that included a win over No. 3 Stanford on Thursday, but also some missed opportunities against the Cardinal in losses Friday and Saturday. Oregon finished on a high note Monday, however, winning in the tight quarters of Benedetti Diamond — which features minimal foul territory and a right-field fence just 300 feet from home plate, protected by a wall of netting 60 feet high.
"This is a good win today; they're a good team, and they've had a good year," UO coach George Horton said. "It's a road win, in a quirky ballpark that definitely provides a home-field advantage."
How It Happened: Stinging from narrow losses at Stanford on Friday and Saturday, but refreshed by a day off Easter Sunday, the Ducks jumped out to an early lead Monday. Four days after hitting the program's first back-to-back homers in nearly two years, Oregon did it again in the second inning at USF.
Jonny DeLuca blasted a ball high into that right-field netting, above the yellow line demarcating the top of the outfield wall. Ray Soderman followed with a high pop up to left that caught the wind and carried over the fence, making it 2-0.
That staked Acuna to a lead, and he made it hold up through the fourth. The sophomore right-hander recovered from giving up three runs to USF without recording an out a week earlier in Eugene by throwing four two-hit innings, with one walk and five strikeouts. Cullen Kafka (3-0) replaced Acuna and pitched a scoreless fifth.
In the top of the sixth, the Ducks tacked on. Kenyon Yovan sparked the small-ball rally with a one-out walk, and he reached second on a bunt single by DeLuca. At that point, the Ducks had just one hit in their last 12 at-bats with runners in scoring position, going back to Saturday's game at Stanford, but Soderman came through with an RBI single that also moved DeLuca to third. Ryne Nelson followed with a squeeze attempt, and ended up reaching on a bunt single that plated DeLuca for a 4-0 lead.
The Dons (18-10) answered with two of their own off Kafka in the bottom of the inning. But Peyton Fuller, Nico Tellache, Hunter Breault and Parker Kelly combined to blank USF from there, and DeLuca capped a 2-for-4 day that included two runs with his second RBI, a sacrifice fly in the seventh. Kelly struck out two in a 1-2-3 ninth inning for his second save.
The victory made for a positive ending to the road trip, which featured its share of frustration as well.
"We had our shot, but you can never get those things back," Horton said. "But the good news is, we're not left behind yet, and I truly believe this team has enough to be in the hunt."
Duck Notes: Yovan was named the Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week on Monday in recognition of his win against Stanford where he beat teh No. 3 Cardinal after throwing six scoreless innings and fanning a career-high nine. ... Acuna's five strikeouts tied his career high. … Fuller got one out on one pitch to open the seventh, Tellache retired the only batter he faced and Breault closed the inning with another one-pitch out, before pitching the eighth as well. … Kyle Kasser's eighth-inning single was the 156th hit of his career, putting him alone in eighth on the UO career list. …DeLuca entered the day with seven sacrifice flies this season, tied for first in the NCAA's Division I, before hitting his eighth Monday. … The sixth-inning hits by Soderman and Nelson with runners in scoring position were the only two in 13 such at-bats for the Ducks. Two days after stranding 13 runners Saturday at Stanford, they left 14 on base Monday.
On Deck: The Ducks return home for a three-game series against Washington State in PK Park beginning Friday at 6 p.m.
