Ducks squander strong effort from Yovan
04/20/18 | Baseball
Corvallis, Ore. – Kenyon Yovan gave Oregon a quality start on the mound but the Oregon offense struggled against No. 10 Oregon State in a 2-1 loss Friday at Goss Stadium in a Pac-12 Conference game.
How it happened: Beavers' starting pitcher Bryce Fehmel (5-1) kept the Oregon bats quiet over 7.1 shutout innings, picking up the win. Fehmel struck out four and gave up just three hits and retired 12 in a row at one point.
The game was scoreless through the first four and a half innings before Oregon State took the lead. Tyler Malone hit a solo homer in the fifth, his second home run of the series as well as his fourth in as many games.
The Beavers (28-6, 9-5 Pac-12) added a run in the sixth, but it could have been much worse. OSU loaded the bases with no outs and the middle of the lineup coming to the plate, but Ducks' starter Kenyon Yovan (3-2) scrambled out of it allowing just the one run on a sacrifice fly.
The Ducks (19-17, 6-11 Pac-12) made things interesting in the top of the ninth, pushing across one run and getting the tying run on base. Jonny DeLuca reached on a hit by a pitch to lead off the inning, before Spencer Steer singled to left putting runners on first and second with no outs. DeLuca advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a sacrifice fly by Jakob Goldfarb but a strikeout ended the game.
Duck notes: Jason Drees, who had a pinch hit in the eighth inning, is 4-for-10 as a pinch hitter this season … Kyle Kasser passed Scott Heineman (2012-15) for eighth all-time in at bats at Oregon with 525 … He made his first start of the season at first base, in place of Gabe Matthews … Yovan turned in his fourth straight quality start, throwing seven innings with five strikeouts while allowing two runs on five hits … Steer recorded his eighth multi-hit game of the season and 24th of his career … Oregon State was 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position and 0-for-9 with runners on base.
On deck: Oregon and Oregon State play game three of their series Saturday at 4 p.m. The game will be televised on the Pac-12 Network.
