Soderman walk-off wins series
04/29/18 | Baseball
EUGENE, Ore. – Ray Soderman delivered a walk-off double in the bottom of the 10th inning to give Oregon a 2-1 win over USC on Sunday at PK Park. The win clinched the series for the Ducks.
How it happened: Soderman drove a one-ball, no-strike pitch to the right field corner with one out scoring Daniel Patzlaff from second. Patzlaff, who came in defensively in the top of the ninth inning, reached base to lead off the inning when he was hit by a pitch and moved to second on a Taylor Travess sacrifice bunt.
Oregon starter Kolby Somers gave the Ducks arguably his best start of the season. The freshman from Hillsboro, Ore., tossed 6.1 scoreless innings while allowing just two hits with no walks and five strikeouts. Somers didn't allow a base runner past second base and retired the last 12 batters he faced before giving way to reliever Parker Kelly with one out and nobody on in the top of the seventh.
Oregon (21-20, 8-13 Pac-12) jumped out to a lead in the first inning for the third consecutive day. Jakob Goldfarb led off the inning with a single, moved to second on a Jonny DeLuca bunt single, stole third and scored on a Spencer Steer sacrifice fly.
USC (19-21, 7-14 Pac-12) tied the game with a run in the top of the ninth off Oregon closer Ryne Nelson. The Trojans got three hits off Nelson (2-1) in the inning, including a game-tying RBI single by Matthew Acosta. The Ducks' stopper got out of a bases loaded jam in the ninth after giving up the tying run, before pitching a scoreless 10th inning to get the win.

On Ray Soderman...
"There is nobody that works harder on our team than Ray. I'm kind of corny on that, I think the game rewards guys that work hard, and he works hard."
On how they prepared for game three...
"We did a little different preparation today. We didn't hit on the field, we didn't take infield, kind of a show-and-go, because we have had a tough time finishing series. For that reason too, [this win] feels really good."
Ray Soderman, Junior, Catcher
On needing a clutch hit...
"Our pitchers have been doing a really good job all season of holding them to as little as possible and we needed a big hit like that. I'm happy that we were able to win this game because we had it there, and I think we deserved to win this game."
Duck Notes: Somers pitched a season-long 6.1 innings … Oregon's run in the first inning snapped a streak of 24 consecutive scoreless innings with Somers on the mound … Somers has a 2.01 ERA in his four starts at home … Soderman snapped an 0-for-19 skid with his walk-off double … It was the Ducks' first walk-off win since March 3, 2017 against Mississippi State when Kyle Kasser hit a walk-off single … Goldfarb finished the series 6-for-10 with three doubles and four runs scored … Oregon won a Pac-12 series finale for the first time since beating USC on May 21, 2017 … Oregon is now 12-3 all-time against USC at PK Park.
