Oregon returns 15 starters including seven on both offense and defense, from the 2017 club that went 7-6 overall. Highlighting the returning starters on offense is junior quarterback Justin Herbert, who led Oregon to 49.1 points per game over his eight starts last season and is the only current FBS quarterback in the nation averaging 40 points per game over at least 10 career starts.
Led by returning junior linebacker Troy Dye and senior defensive lineman Jalen Jelks on defense, Oregon made a major jump in nearly every statistical category from 2016 to 2017, including total defense (from 115th to 46th), third down defense (from 122nd to 24th), sacks (from 61st to 30th), rushing defense (from 121st to 25th) and interceptions (from 81st to 23rd). Dye was a major catalyst in all of those categories, finishing the season as one of just three FBS players with at least 100 tackles, 10 tackles for loss, four sacks, one interception, one fumble forced and one fumble recovery. Jelks recorded his team-leading 6.5 sacks all in Pac-12 play in 2017 and finished third in the conference with 15 tackles for loss.
