Ducks Clip UBC for Exhibition Win
08/17/19 | Women's Soccer
EUGENE, Ore. — Ally Cook and Eden Hardy both scored to lead Oregon to a 2-1 victory over British Columbia Saturday night in an exhibition match in front of 316 fans at Pape' Field.
Â
How It Happened: Cook's goal came off a nice set up on a corner kick in the 27th minute. Sakura Yoshida started the series with a short pass from the right corner to Mia Palmer, who sent a perfect ball into the box. Cook then headed the ball over UBC goalkeeper Emily Moore from 13 yards out.
In the 82nd minute, Jordan Wormdahl fed a perfectly-paced through ball into the middle of the box that Hardy ran on to and crossed into the net from 15 yards away.
The Thunderbirds answered in the ensuing kickoff when Natasha Klasios sent a rocket under the left side of the crossbar from 27 yards out, but the Ducks kept UBC out of the net after that.
Who Stood Out: Cook and Wormdahl were aggressive on the offensive end, with Wormdahl firing off four shots and Cook three as the Ducks outshot the Thunderbirds 15-4. Both players had two shots on goal.
What It Means: Oregon played all 10 freshmen, including three who started – Cook, Yoshida and Croix Soto – as the Ducks will be looking for major contributions from the nation's 17th-ranked recruiting class.
Â
Quotable:
Head coach Kat Mertz
"I need the freshman class to step up right away. We saw Ally Cook make impact today, and she's been doing that at practice. (Yoshida) in the midfield, she is talented and that's why she trained with Seattle Reign all summer long."
Â
Freshman forward Ally Cook
"It was so exciting because the first game you just don't know what to expect as a freshman coming in. Being able to start was truly something really special and just playing with everybody, it was really cool to feel that for the first time and hopefully we continue to build."
Â
Notable: Redshirt senior forward Taylor Kuroda saw the field for the first time in nearly two years. She sat out the 2018 season with a knee injury suffered that spring. Saturday night, she entered the game as a substitute and ripped a shot that went just wide across the face of the net … Redshirt freshman defender Claire Watkins also made her Oregon debut after sitting out last fall due to injury.
Â
Up Next: Oregon opens the regular season at Fresno State Thursday at 7 p.m. (Mountain West Net).
