Ducks In Third Through 18 Holes
02/25/22 | Women's Golf
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Hsin-Yu (Cynthia) Lu and Ching-Tzu Chen led the Oregon women's golf team to a solid start at the Florida State Match Up on Friday at Seminole Legacy Golf Club.
The No. 3 Ducks fired a 2-over 290 in the opening round of the three-day tournament, putting them in third place overall and just two strokes back of Virginia Tech and host Florida State. Lu led the way with a terrific 4-under 68, and Chen came in with a 1-under 71.
"Overall, it was a pretty good first day for the Ducks," head coach Derek Radley said. "We left some shots out there on the final few holes that we certainly would like to have back, but I like where we're at going into tomorrow. We need to stay aggressive and continue to play with confidence."
How it Happened: Lu was nearly flawless in round one, making five birdies and just one bogey en route to her fourth sub-70 performance of the season. The sophomore's lone bogey put her at 1 under through eight holes, and she bounced back with five straight pars before finishing with three birdies in her final five holes to end the day with a 68.
Lu is in second place overall after 18 holes, and was one of just two players in the field to shoot better than 70. Virginia Tech's Emily Mahar is the current individual leader after carding a 7-under 65.
"Great round for Cynthia," Radley sad. "She was rock solid all day and really put together a great finish to come away with a 68. She's something special to watch."
Chen was at even par through 10 holes before making three birdies to get to 3 under going into No. 17. She finished with a pair of bogeys, but still came with her seventh par-or-better round of the season. Chen will enter round two in a tie for fifth overall at 1 under.
Sofie Kibsgaard Nielsen finished the opening round with a 3-over 75 with three birdies, and juniors Briana Chacon and Brittany Shin each shot 4 over to round out the counting scores. Tze-Han (Heather) Lin – competing as an individual this weekend – came in at 5 over.
