Solhaug’s 64 Paces Ducks at Pasatiempo
04/10/23 | Men's Golf
SANTA CRUZ, Calif. – Greg Solhaug shot a career low round of 64 that included seven birdies and just one bogey to lead No. 22 Oregon to second place after the first round of the Western Intercollegiate. All five counting scorers for the Ducks were under par on Monday and all were among the top 20 individuals.
Solhaug nearly tied the course record of 7-under 63 at the 6,514-yard, par 70 Pasatiempo Golf Club. The junior from Norway was at 7-under until a bogey on No. 18.
California was the first round leader, a shot ahead of the Ducks at 16-under 334. Oregon was at 335, followed by No. 8 Stanford (339) No. 9 Pepperdine (345) and No. 23 Colorado State and BYU tied for fifth at 352.
"The guys played great today," said coach Casey Martin. "They love this golf course and tournament. We were excited to play and overall it was a fun day for us."
How It Happened: Solhaug landed his approach shots on the green on most holes, which led to seven birdies. He opened his round with a birdie on the first hole. Solhaug, whose previous low round was a 66, really got things rolling with a birdie on No. 5. That began a stretch of six birdies in 10 holes.
He birdied the seventh, ninth, 11th and 14th holes. On his final birdie of the day on the par three 15th hole, Solhaug moved to 7-under. The only blemish on his scorecard was a bogey on No. 18 that left him tied for second at 6-under 64.
"I played solid," said Solhaug, who was one shot out of the lead. "I hit a lot of the greens and made a couple of long putts which really helped."
Owen Avrit was nearly as impressive in shooting a 5-under 65. He closed strong on both sides of the course. Avrit was even through seven holes before birdieing the eighth and rolling in an eagle putt on the par five ninth hole. He then bogeyed No. 11 before back-to-back birdies on 12 and 13.
Avrit gave a shot back with a bogey on No. 16, but then closed his round with back-to-back birdies on No. 17 and No. 18. He was in fourth place after the first round.
The Ducks also counted a 68 from Greyson Leach who was tied for 13th at 2-under. His round included five birdies and an eagle on No. 9.
Nate Stember and Aiden Krafft rounded out the scoring for the Ducks with 1-under 69s. They were tied for 18th.
Quotable
Junior Greg Solhaug
"Kept it center of the green. Had a lot of putts for birdie. Made a lot of them."
Notable: Solhaug's previous low round, 66, came just over a year ago at The Goodwin at Stanford … It was the third eagle of the season for Leach and the second for Avrit … Oregon has counted all 24 of Avrit's rounds this season … The Western Intercollegiate is a play six, count five format like the Ducks will see at the Pac-12 Championships at the end of the month … California's Aaron Du tied the course record with a 63.
