Annette "Hand" Peters

One of the greatest runners ever to compete at Hayward Field in a green and yellow singlet, Annette was twice voted the Winbigler Performer of the Year Award. She also was named winner of the prestigious Jackson Award in 1988 as the top senior woman athlete at Oregon. She took home four All-American track certificates and was NCAA champion at 5000 meters in ’88 at Hayward Field. Ten years out of college, Annette still ranked second in all-time Duck performances in the mile, 3000 and 5000 and was fifth in the 1500.
Paced by Annette’s fifth-place, All-America finish, the Oregon cross country team won the NCAA women’s title in fall 1987. She also earned a spot on the Pac-10’s all-decade team after capturing five league crowns in only three conference championships. Her post-collegiate running was brilliant. She raced her way onto the U.S. Olympic team at 3000 meters in 1992. Peters earned three national championships. In 1993 she was the USA Track & Field 1500 champion in 4:11.53 and won the 3000 at 8:48.59. The Springfield area elementary school teacher successfully defended the 3000 crown in ’94.
