Bob Newland
- Induction:
- 1994
He played with some of the best athletes in Oregon football history and was considered to be among them. No receiver before or since has come close to duplicating his receiving records established during the 1970 season when he fielded 67 passes for 1,123 yards for the nation’s No. 2-ranked passing attack. If not for a decorated teammate, he would be the Ducks’ all-time leader in career pass catching as well.
He paced the Pacific-10 Conference and ranked ninth nationally in receiving and his numbers have stood the test of time, still ranking among the league’s career leaders. As a senior, he was voted by his teammates as the team’s most valuable player during a season in which Bobby Moore/Ahmad Rashad became Oregon’s first-ever 1,000-yard rusher. He earned all-America recognition following his final collegiate season and started four seasons for the NFL’s New Orleans Saints.
