Dave Wilcox
- Induction:
- 1993
- Class:
- 1964
The 1963 Sun Bowl team had several high-profile players, but it also had a blossoming superstar in the trenches in Wilcox. During the era of two-way players, he protected and escorted such offensive weapons as Bob Berry and Mel Renfro and spearheaded a defense that blanked Oregon State until the underdog Ducks were comfortably ahead, 31-0, and throttled Southern Methodist in the Sun Bowl when Oregon led by 21-0 after three quarters.
The native of Vale played just two seasons at Oregon after transferring from junior college. He was stationed at end on defense and that’s what lured the professional scouts. He was selected as the squad’s most improved player for the 1963 season, voted as the most valuable lineman in the Hula Bowl all-star contest and selected in the third round of the NFL draft by San Francisco. He was five times an all-pro selection and played in seven Pro Bowls and is considered one of the 49ers’ best linebackers ever.
