When it came to breaking records, few at Oregon did it better. He snapped American marks at three distances and anchored a team in the four-mile relay to an all-time world best. As a collegian, he never lost a race, winning three consecutive NCAA titles during a time when freshmen were not allowed to compete. Instead, he seized the 1,500 at the Pan American Games that year. He made the Olympic team as a sophomore and again in 1964.
He eclipsed the U.S. standard in the 1,500 twice in 1960, took down the mile mark that year and again in 1961 and established the two-mile American record as a senior. The native of Cottage Grove won the 1,500 as a sophomore and successive NCAA miles his final two seasons, helping the Ducks to a landslide victory for their first NCAA team title in 1962 at Hayward Field. He also was the first to run faster than four minutes in the mile at the world famous track stadium.
