Jim Bailey
- Induction:
- 1993
Recognized as one of the greatest distance runners of his era, he competed in track and field’s glamour event and etched part of its history. A middle distance runner from Australia, he ran the mile in under four minutes for the first time on American soil, beating the world recordholder in the process before a crowd of 40,000 in Los Angeles’ Memorial Coliseum in the spring of 1956.
He came to Oregon at the age of 26 because he “liked the way Oregon alums talked about their school.” While a member of that running fraternity, he won two conference titles and the 1955 NCAA mile crown during his career, but his 3:58.6 will always be a landmark. He was an Olympian for Australia in the 800 while at Oregon.
