He sped halfway around the Berlin track to earn silver medal at 200 meters at the 1936 Olympic Games much to the anger and dismay of one of those in attendance, Adolph Hitler. The world-class sprinter then won two championships for Oregon, triumphing at 220 yards in both the 1938 NCAA and AAU meets.
He could soar far as well as run fast, winning the Pacific Coast Conference title in the 1938 long jump. The University of Oregon Alumni Association recognized his myriad of accomplishments in 1984, voting the Southern Californian recipient of the prestigious Webfoot Award.
