A standout in the secondary, Mario Clark earned the distinction of becoming Oregon’s first defensive back to start the season opener as a true freshman in 1972. Later that season, he became the first freshman to earn Pac-8 defensive player-of-the-week accolades. By the time he was finished at Oregon, the Pasadena, Calif., cornerback had accumulated 13 career interceptions, as well as first-team all-conference, all-coast, and honorable mention All-America acclaim. His 13 career interceptions ranked fourth in school history at the time of his graduation and still rank tied for the sixth-best career mark at Oregon some 42 years later. He was the 1976 Senior Bowl defensive player of the game and was also selected for the 1976 East-West Shrine Game. After being chosen as the 18th overall pick in the 1976 NFL Draft, he went on to play eight seasons for the Buffalo Bills, where he was named to the NFL’s 1976 all-rookie team. He completed his nine-year professional football career by winning the 1984 Super Bowl with San Francisco.
