Men's Basketball Team 1938-39
- Induction:
- 1992
The style of play on which young coach Howard Hobson drilled his team surprised the opposition as much as anything, but the Ducks also overwhelmed them all the way to an NCAA championship. The team was nicknamed as “The Tall Firs” not only for their height, but all happened to be native Oregonians as well.
They defeated Ohio State, 46-33, in Evanston, Ill., for the first-ever NCAA crown and three of the team members (Bobby Anet, 6-4 Laddie Gale and 6-8 Urgel “Slim” Wintermute) were accorded all-America honors. A fourth, 6-4 John Dick, would be so honored the next year. The Oregon team had a 29-5 record, but the starting five played in only two losses.
