Deemed as the “roughest, toughest and best all-around fullback” by an opposing coach, he first was known for his defensive play, but became an all-American in 1933 when he added offense to his resume. He earned the nickname of “Iron Mike” when Oregon captured a share of the Pacific Coast Conference crown in his final collegiate season by winning nine of 10 games. He was a two-year all-Coast selection and played in the East-West Shrine and Coaches All-Star games following his senior season.

The team of 1933 pushed its unbeaten streak against Washington to six games, beat Oregon State when neither had lost previously and downed powerful St. Mary’s for the first time in history as he scored important touchdowns in all three games. He was an All-Pro fullback in 1935 with the Chicago Cardinals, but left after three pro seasons to finish his Oregon education in 1936. He also coached the Ducks as an assistant until 1939 when he began a 25-year military career.
