A Sports Illustrated cover boy at 19, a full-blown folk hero by the time he was 24. Prefontaine was one of the most charismatic runners to grace the Hayward Field track. He set two American prep records and followed that with an incredibly flawless collegiate career, winning an unprecedented four NCAA three-mile/5,000-meter titles and three cross country crowns.
He was America’s best distance runner in 1975, setting seven U.S. records and establishing his versatility in races ranging from 2,000 through 10,000 meters. He finished fourth in the 1972 Olympics, but seemed certain to eventually reap
hardware until an automobile accident took his life in 1975.
