A five-time NCAA champion in the pole vault, Tommy Skipper was also one of the most unexpected Pac-10 decathlon champions in league history. His top pole vault clearance at 19-0.25/5.80 meters remained the school record a decade after his graduation, as did his best indoor mark of 18-8.75/5.71 meters. Skipper won his first NCAA title at the 2004 NCAA Outdoor meet, where he cleared 18-8.25. He then won the indoor title in 2005 before sweeping both the indoor and outdoor competitions in 2006. He added his fifth and final NCAA crown with an outdoor win in 2007. He joins two-time Olympic gold medalist Ashton Eaton and distance legend Edward Cheserek as the only three men in school history to win five or more NCAA individual titles. Skipper burst on to the scene as a freshman by winning both the pole vault and the decathlon – in his first-ever try at the 10-event competition – at the 2004 Pac-10 Championships. The six-time All-American and conference outdoor record-holder in the pole vault captured four league titles in all, winning the vault twice more after his freshman campaign (2006, 2007). The Sandy, Ore., standout tied for third in the pole vault at the 2006 USA Outdoor Championships (18-4.5).
