Women's Volleyball Team 1970
- Induction:
- 2000
The Universit's first collection of national-caliber female athletes in school history, this team would establish the foundation for the excellence, determination and pride of future women's athletics at Oregon.
Without the benefit of today's athletic scholarships and little institutional financial support, eight players and two coaches persevered to a fourth-place national finish. After winning the regional championship in Ellensburg, Wash., they were granted one of 28 berths for the second national women's volleyball championships in Lawrence, Kan. Forced to raise most of the necessary funding themselves to make the trip while players were responsible for providing most of their own uniforms, Oregon won three of five matches in the national tournament, with one of the setbacks occurring to the eventual national champion.
Included on the team coached by Karla Rice and Marie Madsen were Nancy Bartow, Kathy Knab, Cathy McNutt, Gayle Shoemaker, Sue Sullivan, Jan Svoboda, Kathy Westfall and Beth Young.
