10/19/03 | Women's Golf
STANFORD, Calif. ? The Oregon women's golf team shot a 300 Sunday and finished 10th at the Stanford/Pepsi Intercollegiate. It was the Ducks' best finish at Stanford's tournament since placing eighth in 1993.
"Today was a little more of an up-and-down day, but we pulled through," said Oregon head coach Shannon Rouillard. "Overall, I was very pleased with the way we played. We haven't fared very well here the last few years so this was another step forward for this young team."
Oregon hadn't finished among the top 10 teams playing the par-72, 6,107-yard Stanford Golf Course since taking eighth in 1993. Since then, the Ducks' best showing was a 12th-place finish twice -- in 1995 and 1996. Last year, Oregon finished 17th.
Erin Andrews shot a career-low 2-under 70 Sunday to climb into a tie for 20th overall at 2-over 218. It was the third straight top 20 finish for the sophomore from Las Vegas, Nev.
"That's just a remarkable accomplishment in this field," said Rouillard of Andrews' play. "This field is second to none in strength of competition."
Top-ranked Duke shot a 286 Sunday to finish at 845 and pull away for a five-stroke victory over a field that featured five of the nation's top six teams. Washington was second at 850, followed by No. 5 UCLA at 859, No. 6 California at 869 and No. 4 New Mexico at 875.
No. 2 Arizona led the second five with an 878. No. 9 Vanderbilt was sixth at 881, No. 19 Tulsa and Texas A&M tied for eighth at 890 and Oregon rounded out the top 10 at 892.
Oregon got key head-to-head victories in terms of regional seeding over a number of Western teams, including Arizona State, which was 11th at 905, Pepperdine in 12th at 907 and No. 25 Stanford 13th at 917. It was the second tournament in a row that the Ducks finished higher than both six-time NCAA champion Arizona State and Stanford, while it was the first time since 2000 NCAA West Regional that Oregon defeated Pepperdine.
Also for Oregon, freshman Kimberly McCready had her third-straight 74 and tied for 33rd at 6-over 222. Johnna Nealy, a junior from Grants Pass, Ore., closed with a 78 Sunday and tied for 42nd at 8-over 224.
The Ducks wrap up the fall season at the Hawaii Fall Golf Classic Nov. 4-5 in Kapolei, Hawaii.
