Women's Basketball Tops California 65-53 With Late Run
08/06/03 | Women's Basketball
BERKELEY, Calif. - The University of Oregon women's basketball team used a 13-2 run in the final minutes Thursday to top California 65-53 before 690 fans at Haas Pavilion.
Oregon led 52-51 after a California 11-2 run at the 3:34 mark. But the Ducks wouldn't be denied, as junior guard Shaquala Williams scored four points, made two outstanding passes that led to baskets by Cathrine Kraayeveld and Kedzie Gunderson, and collected a steal in the final three minutes of play.
"We had a better defensive effort in the second half, but we still need to play hard for 40 minutes," Oregon coach Bev Smith said. "Sometimes we play as individuals and not as a team. When we play as a team, I believe that we can compete with anyone in the Pac-10."
Oregon improved its record to 10-6 and 5-2 in the Pac-10. Meanwhile, California dipped to 5-9 and 0-5. It marked Oregon's fourth win in five games and their 16th triumph out of its last 17 games against California.
Williams, who struggled from the floor by hitting 6-of-17, scored a game-high 16 points and dished out six assists and swiped three steals.
Kraayeveld, a sophomore, notched her second double-double in three games, netting 15 points and pulling down a game-best 10 rebounds. She shot 7-of-12 from the floor as well as had two blocked shots and three assists.
The Ducks struggled in the first half, hitting just 29 percent from the field against the conference's top defensive team as they trailed 24-22 at the break. Oregon rebounded, though, to shoot 49 percent in the second half while holding the Bears to 33 percent.
Senior guard Edniesha Curry played the most minutes in a game since suffering a foot injury before the USC game Dec. 22. In 27 minutes of play, she had 10 points, two assists and two steals in a reserve role. After a scoreless first half, freshman post player Andrea Bills poured in 10 second-half points and grabbed a career-high nine rebounds. Overall, the Ducks'bench outscored the Bears' 25-14.
Now, Oregon has a date Sunday with the nation's fifth-ranked team, Stanford (15-1, 5-0), at Maples Pavilion at 1 p.m.
"We need to come into Stanford and play with energy the entire game," Curry said.
The Oregon-Stanford game will be televised live on Fox Sports Net.
