08/06/03 | Women's Basketball
EUGENE, Ore. - The University of Oregon women's basketball team cruised past California 76-43 on Saturday on Senior Night before 4,820 fans at McArthur Court.
The Ducks' four seniors - Alyssa Fredrick, Ndidi Unaka, Edniesha Curry and Jamie Craighead - all performed well, led by Fredrick's team-high 15 points. Unaka had a team-high-tying seven rebounds in 16 minutes, Curry tied a career-high with five steals and Craighead hit 2-of-3 from 3-point range en route to 10 points along with dishing five assists.
"It was a special night because our team and players were out to salute our seniors," first-year Oregon coach Bev Smith said. "We told ourselves in the locker room that we were going to win."
Oregon, which snapped a three-game losing streak, improved to 13-11 and 8-7 in the Pac-10. Meanwhile, California, losers of six in a row, fell to 6-17 and 1-12.
Craighead, who scored all of her points in the first half, helped Oregon take a 37-16 halftime lead. The Ducks' defense also stepped up, as they held the Bears to just one field goal from the 14-minute mark until about 2:30 on the clock. Overall, the Ducks forced the Bears into 26 percent shooting - the lowest total by an Oregon opponent this year.
"It was an exciting weekend for us because we had some questions to answer and I think we answered them against both Stanford and Cal," Smith said.
Every active player scored for the Ducks, who shot 53 percent from the field - the sixth tim e this season they have made at least 50 percent from the floor.
"This was a big game for Oregon," California coach Caren Horstmeyer said. "And I think they were like, 'We're gonna get it done or we're not' and they did."
Shaquala Williams was Oregon's other double-figure scorer with 11 on 5-of-8 shooting. She also tied a season-high with eight assists compared to one turnover in 23 minutes of play. It was Williams' 11th straight double-digit scoring game.
Kristin Iwanaga led three Bears in double-figures with 12 points on 3-of-4 shooting, including 2-of-2 from 3-point territory. Leigh Gregory added 11 points while Kiki Williams chipped in 10 for California.
Oregon will take on Oregon State in the 67th Civil War this Saturday at Corvallis. Tipoff is at 1 p.m. and the game will be televised by Fox Sports Net.
Although it was Senior Night, the Ducks will make at least one more appearance at McArthur Court as they play host to the inaugural 10-team Pac-10 Tournament March 1-4. Oregon is currently tied with Arizona for sixth place in the conference.
