OREGON 67 - STANFORD 66
February 26, 2004
McArthur Court
Oregon Head Coach Bev Smith
"There's two things for us. Dedicate this to the people of Mac. They make it so special and we wanted to be there for them. They've been with us through our ups and downs. We just wanted to play a basketball game that was a winning effort, where every possession, every rebound and every loose ball we went after and we'd see where that took us. We went at it with a winning effort and ended up with a great win."
"I'm glad Corrie took the shot. It was a great shot. She almost had a double-double, and if she would have passed it on that shot she probably would have had that double-double. She did a great job offensively and defensively tonight. She took the brace off tonight and just went for it."
"Eleanor is certainly a freshman. The fatigue of a long season like this has gotten to her. She's starting to understand her incredible ability. That turn-around jump-shot is hard to stop. Also her defensive ability is great. When she gets those defensive rebounds and starts on those coast-to-coast trips this place gets rowdy."
"She (Kedzie) was fired up. She always gets up for big games and when she has a tough match-up like tonight in Nicole Powell, who is a great player. Offensively tonight Kedzie was almost perfect and that came from staying late and shooting around. But she was our defensive stopper tonight."
Stanford Coach Tara VanDerveer
"I thought Oregon played a great game. They were very aggressive. We got in trouble early I think. They hit eight three's in the first half, and our defense was real passive. They have a great crowd, and a great tradition here. I give Bev and her team a lot of credit for their preparation and execution."
"For us, it's very disappointing. To be in the situation we think we're in, and to not step up and make the plays at the end to win the game is real disappointing."
"We didn't go after a Championship we should for 40 minutes tonight. We didn't do the job defensively we needed to do."
About OSU game: "We're going to have to play a lot better than this. We are going to have to look at who's contributing for us, especially who's producing on the defensive end. We have to execute down the stretch. It's very disappointing to have a game in hand and let it slip away."
Corrie Mizusawa
"This is definitely the number one win for me. It was hard last year to watch and we knew that we could compete with them. We knew that coming into our house we needed to defend Mac and get a ?W' for our fans. We haven't had the season we wanted, but we came out knowing we had nothing to lose and we came away with a W."
On Final Shot: "I was just being aggressive and I thought I had a step on her. I had a wide open lane when I went past her, so I just put it up."
Kedzie Gunderson
On guarding Powell: "I knew going in that she's an awesome ballplayer, and I wasn't going to shut her down completely. But, I wanted to keep her below her averages in all categories. I think I did that. So, it was big payback for last year."
"We definitely came out ready to play. There was no doubt in our minds. We came out with no fear. We wanted to step up and show then we could play with them."
Eleanor Haring
"It was important to just take it one possession at a time, and getting back into it one possession at a time."
"If I have a mismatch on me, I look to use to our advantage. But, not every time. I just look for opportunities to take advantage of."
"This was a great win for us. We've had a really up and down season, and this was a good way to cap it off, and a good way to build for next year."
