LONG BEACH, Calif. ? The No. 24 University of Oregon women's tennis team was upset by Long Beach State, 4-3, Friday, marking the Ducks' first non-conference loss this season. After jumping out to a comfortable 1-0 lead with the doubles point, No. 49 Daria Panova and No. 81 Davina Mendiburu were the only Ducks (13-7, 2-5) to post singles victories, as the 49ers flexed their strength at the bottom-half of the lineup.
In typical fashion, the Ducks jumped out to a 1-0 lead with a clean sweep at all three doubles positions. The teams of No. 45 Panova and Dominika Dieskova and Mendiburu and Ester Bak both improved to 15-5 in dual play with wins at No. 1 and No. 3 respectively.
For the first time this season, UO failed to get support from the bottom-half of the lineup, dropping matches at the No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 positions, including two in three sets.
Panova came through with her team-leading 14th dual win of the season, defeating LBSU's Nicole Bouffler, 6-3, 6-0. After a slow start this season, Panova has reeled off six wins in her last nine matches ? five of those were matches against top-25 players.
Mendiburu improved to a team-best 20-7 overall with a straight set win over Sandra Rocha.
The Ducks take the day off tomorrow and return to action Sunday, when they travel south to take on San Diego, at noon. Oregon will be looking to snap a five-match losing streak.
