Nealy Rebounds in Third Round at NCAA Championships
05/19/05 | Women's Golf
SUNRIVER, Ore. ? Johnna Nealy recovered from Wednesday's 10-over 81 to shoot a 77 Thursday as weather conditions improved at the 6,312-yard, par-71 Meadows Course. Nealy finished the day tied for 96th overall at 21-over 234.
After bogeying four of her first six holes, Nealy began to find her stroke. The senior from Grants Pass, Ore., who started on the back nine, birdied the par-5 17th before giving a couple shots back with a double bogey at 18. She then played the front nine in 1-over par, finishing with four pars and a birdie on No. 6.
Duke got a 6-under 65 from Anna Grzebien and a 3-under 68 from Brittany Lang to rally from fourth place Wednesday to first entering Friday's final round. As a team, the Blue Devils shot a tournament-low 6-under 278 to take a sizeable lead at 21-over 873. The tournament may be Duke's to lose, with Auburn at 881 and defending champ UCLA at 882 the only teams within shouting distance of the Blue Devils.
Grzebien grabbed the lead in the individual race as well at even-par 213. Lang was tied for second at 4-over 217 with UCLA's Charlotte Mayorkas.
