McCready Ties UO Record in Stanford Final Day
10/22/06 | Women's Golf
STANFORD, Calif. – Senior Kim McCready tied the Duck school record for its lowest round in final day action Sunday in the Stanford Intercollegiate, and helped the University of Oregon women's golf team climb two spots to sixth place against an all-star field in its final stop of the fall campaign.
The Ducks shot a two-over third and final-round score of 286 Sunday to finish the three rounds with a score of 878 (+26) after they opened with first- and second rounds of 297 and 295 Friday and Saturday.
“I was ecstatic with our effort today and all tournament,” Oregon head coach Shannon Rouillard said. ”We had a lot of positive energy after our second round yesterday and were able to continue that today. They players worked really hard all tournament long, and it paid off. They got off to a somewhat rough start in the second round yesterday, then composed themselves and went to the front nine and made a fair amount of birdies and finished really strong. Today, they didn't back down and their confidence was infectious.”
The Ducks ranked third among the eight Pac-10 teams on hand, and beat three top-five ranked squads (No. 2 Duke and No. 3 UCLA) and two other squads ranked top-25 nationally (No. 15 New Mexico and No. 21 Arkansas). UO's finish was also its first top-six finish at an invitational on 'The Farm' since they finished fourth in 1997.
Altogether, the Ducks have played in the Stanford Invitational/Intercollegiate 17 times since their first trip in 1988, and also finished top-10 in 1988 (seventh, 996), '92 (sixth-tie, 930), '93 (fourth, 904), '94 (fifth, 922), '97 (fourth, 892) and '98 (eighth, 912).
Individually for UO Sunday, senior Kim McCready shot a four-under 67 final round on the par-71, 5,985-yard course to match the tourney's best round and climbed 11 spots in the final day standings to finish seventh at 2-under for the tournament (71-73-67-211).
McCready also tied the Oregon record for its best single-round score in history with her four-under 67 Sunday. In par 72 action, All-American Paula Patterson shot a 68 in the 1997 West Regional at Tucson, Ariz., and former NCAA qualifier Jerilyn White also recorded a 68 at Stanford in the 2001 Peg Barnard Invitational that spring.
“Once I hit my tee shot on #1, I knew I had my swing going,” McCready said. “With this deep a field, I definitely needed to step up my game, and knew that eventually my putts would start to fall. That certainly happened today because I made a 30-footer on the 13th, and another from the edge of the rough on the 17th. The girls I was paired up, like Amy Eneroth from WSU, are great golfers. If one of them hits a good shot, I take it as a challenge and I'll say to myself that I know can hit it better. (As a team) we knew this was our last chance to play this fall, so we all wanted to come out and have fun. It's a good course, and we had great weather, so it puts you in a good frame of mind.”
The Placerville, Calif., native led UO for the fourth time in her last seven rounds and also enjoyed her fourth round of par or better in nine rounds altogether this fall. On Sunday, she birdied six holes (first, third, fourth, eighth, 12th and 16), parred nine more holes and bogeyed only twice on the 13th and 17th holes.
McCready enjoyed her best finish in the Cardinal-hosted stop after she finished 27th in 2005 (220), 48th in 2004 (226) and 33rd in 2003 (222).
On Sunday, sophomore Cathryn Bristow shot her second round of par on the Stanford Golf Course with her 71 final round that moved her up seven spots into a tie for 13th in the final standings (74-71-71-216). The Huapai, N.Z. native birdied the seventh and 16th holes, shot par on 14 holes, and bogeyed the fifth and 10th holes Sunday. Sunday's score was her fifth in the past seven rounds that was a 74 or better.
Freshman Felicia Eastick also enjoyed her lowest round of the tourney Sunday with an even–par 71 – her first round at par or better for the Ducks – and improved 10th spots in the final individual standings (40th-tie, 80-73-71-224), while fellow frosh Kate Hildahl scored for the Ducks for the sixth straight round this fall (54th, 75-79-77-231).
Senior Therese Wenslow add a 79 round Sunday and ended in a tie for 59th (77-78-79-234) in the field that featured 78 players.
“We had some great individual efforts that I'm sure will help carry us through the winter,” Rouillard said. “I normally don't get to see a lot of #1 or #5 players, so it was special for Kim to ask me to walk the last hole with her after she putted one in from the fringe on the 17th hole. Cathryn showed her mental composure yesterday when she was 3-over at one point and then went birdie, birdie, birdie, par to really turn it around. Today, she got off to a good start and kept it going, and fluctuated between even and 1-over. Felicia played solid the last couple days and hovered around even, too. It was fun to watch to all of the girls attack the course and play with confidence.”
Overall in the team standings, No. 9 Vanderbilt leapfrogged three spots in the team standings to win the tourney by five strokes (288-292-275-855) and edged No. 12 Arizona (second, 277-292-291-860), No. 1 Georgia (third, 284-286-292-862) and No. 6 Stanford (fourth, 286-278-299-863).
Other teams in the field included No. 41 San Jose State (fifth, 297-300-280-877), Oregon (sixth, 297-295-286-878), No. 2 Duke (seventh, 292-293-297-882), No. 15 Mexico (eighth-tie, 294-291-299-884), No. 3 UCLA (eight-tie, 298-296-290-884), No. 21 Arkansas (10th, 305-291-290-886), Washington State (11th, 295-296-306-897), California (12th, 311-295-295-901), Oregon State (13th-tie, 306-300-301-907), No. 46 Washington (13th-tie, 305-299-303-907) and Tulsa (15th, 302-304-307-913).
Individually, Stacy Lewis of Arkansas (71-67-69-207) and Alison Walshe of Arizona (67-71-69-208) both shot a 69 final round to tie for the win with their three-round, six-under score of 207. Lauren Todd of Stanford (70-68-70-208) and Adriana Zwanck of Arizona (68-71-69-208) tied for third place at 208, while second-day leader Whitney Wade followed in fifth place after a 73 Sunday (67-69-73-209).
