Shorthanded Ducks Continue Pac-10 Woes, Fall to Wildcats 6-1

TUCSON -- The No. 36 Ducks are facing what they feared most when they started the dual season with the minimum six players on their roster as injury forced them to default in a doubles match and a singles match and fell 6-1 to the Arizona Wildcats in a Pac-10 dual match Friday afternoon.
The Ducks are still without sophomore Claudia Hirt, who suffered a sprained ankle last week, and were forced to default in her normal position in the lineup.
Anna Powaska was the only Duck to pick up a victory against the No. 44 ranked Wildcats as she defeated Katie Orlesky at the No. 5 position, 6-2, 6-3.
With the loss, the Ducks fall to 12-9 while the Wildcats end their six match losing streak, moving to 9-12 on the year.
Two Ducks took their matches to a third stanza, but unfortunately the team match was already decided, thanks to the default at the sixth position and losses at the top two positions in the lineup as Dominika Dieskova and Carmen Seremeta were defeated easily by their Wildcat opponents. Dieskova fell 6-1, 6-0 to No. 91 ranked Danielle Steinberg while Seremeta fell 6-1, 6-2 to Juliette Mavroleon.
Ana Cecilia Olivos rebounded with a second set win to force the super tiebreak, but would fall to Kasia Jakolew, 7-5, 1-6, (8).
Senior Monica Hoz de Vila was dominant in her first set, shutting out Natalia Toporowska, but the Wildcat freshman took the match in the super tiebreak, 0-6, 7-6(5), (8).
The Ducks continue their Arizona road trip taking on the Arizona State Sun Devils tomorrow at 1:30 p.m.
