Ducks Out of Pac-10 Championships Singles After First Day
04/26/07 | Women's Tennis
OJAI, Calif. -- Anna Powaska was the beneficiary of an injury default by Anastesia Opata of Washington State and advanced to the second round of the invitational bracket, but none of the Ducks in the championship bracket of the Pac-10 Tournament were able to advance past the first round Thursday afternoon.
Powaska's tournament would end in the afternoon session, however, as she fell to Rebecca Rankin of ASU, 4-6, 6-1, 7-6(4).
Oregon's top position player, senior Dominika Dieskova will have to rely on doubles play if she wants to extend her career as an Oregon Duck as she fell in the first round 6-0; 7-6(1) to Jessica Nguyen of Stanford.
The senior from Bratislava, Slovakia was hoping to put together a run that would allow her to make the NCAA Tournament with a chance to break the school record for wins in a season. She already holds the record for matches played with 137 in her career.
Oregon's other senior, Monica Hoz de Vila, took her match to a tiebreak in the second set, but fell to Theresa Logar of Stanford 6-0, 7-6(1).
The last Duck in the championship field, sophomore Carmen Seremeta, fell 6-2, 6-2 to Lindsey Nelson of USC.
The Ducks will participate in doubles competition starting tomorrow morning.
