Women's Tennis defeats Cal Poly at home

EUGENE, Ore.,--The Oregon women's tennis team battled hard this weekend against the Utah Utes Friday afternoon and defeated Cal Poly Sunday morning 4-3 at the Student Tennis Center. Led by experienced returners, the Ducks' Carmen Seremeta had the deciding point after three heated sets and Anna Powaska who came away victorious in both her singles matches this weekend.
“It was a great weekend for the team especially just getting our first win at home for the opening weekend.” Head Coach Paul Reber mentioned after the match.
It was competitive round of doubles with Ana Cecilia Olivos and Celine Rolly in the No. 1 spot against Brittany Blalock and Steffi Wong who defeated the Duck pair 8-5. In the No. 2 spot Amy Markoff and Shannon Brady defeated Siobhan Cavan and Anna Powaska 8-5. Carmen Seremeta and Stephanie McFarlane came away with the win in their match after defeating Diana Filips and Maria Malec 8-5.
The singles matches were crucial for the Ducks as they came away with the wins in the first four spots. In the No. 1 spot Rolly beat Brittany Blalock 6-1, 1-6, 6-3. Seremeta defeated Wong 7-5, 6-7, 7-6 in the No. 2 spot while in the No. 3 spot Powaska swept Brady in two straight sets 6-2, 6-1. In the No. 4 spot McFarlane came away victorious defeating Malec in two sets 6-0, 6-0.
Cal Poly took the last two singles matches in the No. 5 spot Diana Filips defeated Cavan 6-2, 6-0 and
Markoff defeated Mimi Songsermsawas 6-1, 6-2.
In an exhibition match Tina Snodgrass of Oregon also saw some action when she faced Bradford but lost the match 8-3.
“I was very happy with the way the girls played. We didn't win the doubles match but we got the ones we needed in the top spots for singles and it's great that it was enough to get the win” Reber said.
After their first win at home of the 2008 season the Ducks already look to face San Francisco tomorrow evening at 6 p.m. in the Student Tennis Center.
