EUGENE - Freshman Samantha Skillingstad struck out eight Beavers, and senior Sari-Jane Jenkins and junior Blair Williamson homered in the first inning to help the University of Oregon softball team (13-22, 2-6) even its Civil War season series with a 3-2 win over Oregon State Friday afternoon at Howe Field.
In the first inning, Jenkins put Oregon up 1-0 with her fourth homer of the season, and third in the last four games, a lined shot just over the left field wall, 10 feet inside the foul pole.
Sophomore designated player Monique Fuiava followed with a single to center and scored when Williamson homered to right center field - her third of the season - with all coming the past seven games.
UO threatened to score again in the third inning when sophomore Cortney Kivett and Jenkins led off with singles before a fielder's choice groundout and a pair of pop flies ended the inning. The Ducks also put two on with two outs in the sixth inning with a walk by freshman Kelsey Chambers and a single by junior Carlyn Re, but an infielder grounder led to the third out.
On the mound, the Spokane, Wash., native Skillingstad fanned seven or more batters for the eighth time this season, and walked four, and allowed six hits and two earned runs. Skillingstad's 118 strikeouts overall in '09 moved her to ninth all-time for UO in a season, only seven behind former Duck Alicia Cook (seventh, 125, 2007).
The Beavers' first run came in the fourth inning when after a walk and stolen base by Ashley Sanchez, Deann Young knocked in her four batters later. OSU added its final run in the fifth on a two-out, bases-loaded walk to Stef Ewing before second baseman Kelsey Chambers made a running catch on a pop fly to end the inning.
OSU also stranded two runners in the fourth inning and another in the second.
Six Ducks hit safely in the game - sophomores Ashley Kivett (1-for-2) and Cortney Kivett (1-for-3), Fuiava (1-for-3), Jenkins (2-for-3, 1 run), Re (1-for-3) and Williamson (1-for-3, 1 run, 2 RBI).
The Salem, Ore., native Jenkins collected her 225th and 226th career hits Friday and is now only one away from the second-best mark in school history, while school record holder Julie Cavanaugh (234) looms only eight ahead. Already the school career stolen base record holder (90), Jenkins also ranks top-10 for UO career-wise in batting average (sixth, .337), runs (fourth, 131), doubles (seventh, 33) and walks (10th, 64).
For Oregon State (19-19, 2-6), starting pticher Kelly Dyer (8-12) took the loss, and in her one inning of work, she allowed three earned runs on three hits, struck out one and walked none. Paige Hall pitched the final five innings, struck out three, walked one, allowed four hits and no runs.
At the plate for the visitors, Sanchez was the only player with multiple hits (2-for-3, 1 run), and four others also hit safely.
In the annual series sponsored by Northwest Dodge Dealers, the Beavers won the first meeting of the season, 2-1, in Corvallis, March 11. Williamson went 2-for-3 in the game and tripled for UO, while Cortney Kivett also had two hits.
Looking ahead, the two teams meet again Saturday, April 11 at 1 p.m. at Howe Field for 'Pink Out the Park' day. Fans are asked to wear pink to support breast cancer awareness month.
In an effort to raise more money for the cause before the game, spectators are encouraged to bid on a variety of silent auction items donated by the Oregon softball team. Some of the items include: game-worn pink jerseys, a team-autographed softball, a lunch with head coach Kathy Arendsen, and a chance to throw out the first pitch vs. No. 7 UCLA next weekend. All donations collected at the game will go to the Willamette Valley Cancer Center Foundation.
