Little Tied for Lead in NCAA Central Regional Opener

COLUMBUS, Ind. ? University of Oregon junior Kendra Little's two-under 70 first round paced the NCAA Central Regional field Thursday, while the No. 32 Ducks were tied for fourth overall at the Otter Creek Golf Club.
The Ducks shot a 305 on the par-72, 6,417-yard course to finish seven positions above its pre-meet tourney seed (11th).
In the 24-team standings, returning national champion and No. 2 Arizona State (first, 297) led the field by two strokes with its nine-over score. No. 4 USC followed in second place (299), four strokes ahead of No. 7 Purdue (third, 303).
No. 28 Oklahoma State was tied for fourth place with Oregon at 305, one stroke ahead of No.21 New Mexico (sixth, 306). Other teams in the top 10 included No. 22 Florida State (seventh, 308), No. 35 Kent State and No. 42 Ole Miss (eighth-tie, 309) and No. 13 Michigan State (10th, 310).
The remaining team scores follow ? No. 16 Denver (11th-t, 312), No. 14 Georgia (11th-t, 312), No. 33 Louisville (13th-t, 315), No. 80 Illinois State (13th-t, 315), No. 47 Baylor (15th, 316), No. 54 Indiana (16th, 318), No. 45 San Diego State (17th, 319), No. 37 Northwestern (18th, 321), No. 49 Tulsa (19th, 324), No. 61 N.C. State (20th-t, 328), No. 43 Notre Dame (20th-t, 328), Murray State (22nd, 336), Detroit Mercy (23rd, 352) and Jackson State (24th, 357).
Individually, Little was tied atop the leaderboard with Purdue's Thea Hoffmeister with their two-under scores of 70. Only one other player broke par ? ASU's Juliana Murcia (third, 71) ? and four others were tied for fourth place at 72.
The Eugene native Little carded four birdies on the par-3 eighth, par-4 11th and 17th and par-5 18th holes. She added par scores on 12 holes, and had only two bogeys on the par-4 10th and 16th holes.
Hoffmeister posted five birdies on the par-5 first, par-4 11th, par-5 14th, par-3 15th and par-4 17th. She had par scores on 10 holes (2-6, 8-9, 12-13, 16), and bogeyed three holes (the par-4 seventh and 10th holes and par-5 18th hole).
Little led UO for the 41st time in her 95th career round Thursday and shot her eighth under-par round this season and 20th career-wise.
Also for UO, sophomore Ashley Edwards and freshman Cheyenne Hickle were tied for 27th place overall (77), senior Kate Hildahl rounded out UO's scoring (69th-t, 81) and junior Erica Omlid (86th-t, 83) followed two strokes back.
Among the team's other first-round birdies, Edwards accomplished the feat on the par-4 second and 11th holes as did Omlid on the latter hole, while Hildahl followed suit on the par-5 14th.
The Ducks are making their third straight regional appearance and 15th overall, and bidding for their seventh NCAA berth and first since 2000. The top eight team finishers after Saturday's final round will earn bids to the NCAA Championships two weeks away in Wilmington, N.C., May 18-21.
