STANFORD, Calif. – For the second straight day, the No. 29 University of Oregon women's golf team posted its second-best round ever and climbed a place after Saturday's second round of the Stanford Intercollegiate.
On the par 71, 6,148-yard course, UO shot a season-best three-under score of 281 and moved into a tie for third place, thanks to two more rounds under par, another at par and a final one at one-over. The Ducks also finished only two strokes shy of its best ever tally – a five-under 283 in the 2009 UNLV Spring Rebel Invitational.
In the overall team results, UO improved to third place (282-281-563), and trailed only No. 1 UCLA (first, 277-279-556) and No. 10 Vanderbilt (second, 281-279-560). No. 8 USC (284-280-564) and No. 36 Washington (277-287-564) followed in a tie for fourth place in the 16-team field that featured six top-10 teams and three more ranked top 30 this week by Golfstat.
“We were proud of how smart and disciplined our team stayed through the day,” Oregon head coach Ria Scott said. “They did not waver from their plan of making aggressive swings at conservative targets.”
Duck freshman Cassy Isagawa repeated her first-day score and moved into a tie for the lead (67-67-134). Her four-under score was her sixth of par or better in eight rounds this season, and again tied the sixth-best score in school history.
The Wailuku, Hawai'i native shot seven birdies Saturday (#1, 4, 7, 11, 14-16), eight pars (#2, 5, 6, 9, 10, 12, 13, 18) and three bogeys (#3, 8, 17).
Junior Cheyenne Hickle followed in a tie for 18th place (70-71-141), thanks to her third round of par or better this season. The Gilbert, Ariz., native carded two birdies (#12, 14), 14 pars (#1, 2, 3, 4, 7-11, 13, 15-18) and two bogeys (#3, 6).
“I was rolling the ball well today,” Hickle said, “and tried to give myself plenty of opportunities on the green.”
Freshman Cali Hipp (18th, 71-70-141) shot a season best score for the second straight day and also celebrated her first under-par collegiate round en route to a six-place jump in the overall standings. The Caldwell, Idaho native shot an eagle on the first hole, added two birdies (#7, 11), 12 pars (#2-5, 8, 10, 13-18) and three bogeys (#6, 9, 12).
Senior Ashley Edwards followed in a tie for 54th place (74-73-147), and sophomore Raphaela Dyer was tied for 67th place overall (76-74-150).
Glancing at the remaining Duck scorecards, their birdie/par counts follow – Edwards (4/8) and Dyer (4/9).
