
W Tennis Closes Out ITA Regionals from Palo Alto

PALO ALTO, CALIF - The University of Oregon women's tennis team concluded play in the Northwest ITA Regional tournament in Palo Alto, Calif. finishing on a high note with much to look forward to in the remaining fall season. The trio of Patricia Skowronski, Sofia Hager and Julia Metzger represented the 2011-12 squad over three days of action including matches in singles, doubles and consolations draws.
"We had great energy and competed very well at the last the last day of the tournament," said women's assistant coach Maja Kovacek. "The girls are excited to get back on the practice courts for the next ten days and have a great last tournament of the fall season in Houston."
The Ducks rounded out the third day of competition with singles and doubles consolation matches. In singles, Metzger dropped her consolation match 6-0, 6-4 to Tayler Davis of California. Skowronski also fell in the Sunday draw consolation round to Elisabeth Fournier of Washington State 6-4, 6-4.
Hager turned things around for the Ducks by defeating Melissa McQueen of Fresno State 3-6, 7-6 (5), 10-6. It was a hard-fought match in which the Oregon freshman battled back from being down 1-0 and ended up victorious in a third set tiebreaker.
"Sofia (Hager) saved two match points at 4-5 in the second set and came back to win in the match tiebreak," said coach Kovacek. "She fought hard and played her best tennis when it mattered most."
In the only doubles match on Sunday for the Ducks, the tandem of Hager and Skowronski got back to their winning ways by defeating Hansen/Masarova (UOP) 8-3.
After returning to Eugene, Ore. and rejoining the rest of the team, the Oregon women will have two weeks to recover and prepare for the Houston Invitational Nov. 4-6.
