Bauer's Complete Game Clinches Series For UCLA
05/08/11 | Baseball
EUGENE, Ore. –
Trevor Bauer clinched the series for UCLA tossing a one-run complete
game in a 3-1 victory over Oregon on Saturday night at PK Park.
Bauer (9-2), who
entered the weekend as the nation's leader in strikeouts, and led all
Pac-10 pitchers in ERA, wins, innings pitched, and opponent batting
average, held the Ducks to one run on four hits.
Bauer tossed the
sixth complete game of his season and struck out 12 as UCLA (26-16,
13-7) clinched the series over the Ducks (23-22, 5-12). He also retired
the final 10 batters of the game.
Oregon freshman Ryon Healy
scored the Ducks only run with a game-tying solo home run in the bottom
of the fourth. It was the rookie's second home run of the season as
UO's first baseman went 2-for-3 at the plate and extended his hitting
streak to eight games.
Right-hander Madison Boer
(3-4) fell just two outs shy of a complete game, tossing eight and 1/3
innings on the mound for the Ducks. The Eden Prairie, Minn., native held
UCLA to three runs on six hits and three walks in his 10th quality
start of the season. He also struck out five.
UCLA decided the
game in the top of the fifth as Kevin Williams' two-run single plated
Steve Rodriguez and Pat Valaika. Rodriguez was issued a leadoff walk and
Valaika doubled to put runners at second and third for Williams.
The Ducks stranded the game-tying runs in the bottom of the sixth as KC Serna failed to advance Healy and Aaron Jones. That was the last inning an Oregon batter would reach base.
UCLA took a one-run lead in the top of the first as Jeff Gelalich's leadoff double slowly snaked by J.J. Altobelli down the left field line. Gelalich was sacrificed to third before scoring on a Dean Espy groundout.
The Bruins were held to just hits six by Boer and reliever Kellen Moen.
The series finale is
set for 12 p.m. on Sunday from PK Park. In celebration of Mother's Day,
Duck fans are asked to Pink out the Park. Sunday's game will be
televised on Comcast SportsNet Northwest , CSN California and CSS
Southeast.
