EUGENE - The University of Oregon volleyball team flexed its depth in its first appearance of the season in Saturday's Green-Yellow Exhibition, held only five days after its first practice of the fall.
Seventh-year head coach Jim Moore divided the squads evenly, and the 'White' team won, 3-1, in the tightly-contested battle over the 'Green' team by a? 22-25, 25-19, 25-21, 25-18 score.
For the White squad, junior outside hitter Alaina Bergsma validated her All-Pac-10 honorable mention nod from last season with team highs in kills (24), hitting (.360) and blocks (4), and also added 10 digs.
Two other teammates had double-digit kill figures - freshman outside hitter Liz Brenner (13) and sophomore middle blocker Ariana Williams (12), while Brenner, freshman outside hitter Chloe Buckendahl and freshman setter Shellsy Ashen each ended with 12 digs. Williams also tied for the match high in blocks (4).
For the Green squad, junior outside hitter Katherine Fischer racked up 15 kills, and hit .190 - team bests in each category.
Junior outside hitter Lauren Gross added 11 kills, and three roster-mates had +10 digs - junior libero Kellie Kawasaki (a match high 17), sophomore setter Lauren Plum (10) and sophomore outside hitter (10 digs). Plum also owned the match high in aces (2), and junior middle blocker transfer and newcomer Milica Krstojevic owned a team high in blocks (4).
In the team comparisons, the White team held advantages in hitting (.260-.150), digs (54-48) and blocks (9-7), and the Green squad owned an edge in aces (5-2).
Looking ahead, the team returns to the floor for another free exhibition against an all-star Duck alumni team next Friday, August 19 at 7 p.m. Former All-Americans Sonja Newcombe and Neticia Enesi, and 2010 All-Pac-10 First Team choice Heather Meyers are expected to play, among several other great Duck players.
