Ducks drop two spots, finishing 11th at Northrop Grumman Challenge
02/16/12 | Women's Golf
PALOS VERDES, Calif. - The No. 18 University of Oregon women's golf team fell two spots with a 30–over 314 at the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge on Wednesday to finish 11th in its first event of the spring.
The Ducks (304-300-314-918) shot their highest round on the final day of the 54-hole event on the par-71 5,912 yard course.
“Hole locations were tough today, but that is definitely no excuse for how we played,” Oregon head coach Ria Scott said. “We need to learn how to adjust to course conditions and our ball flight tendencies a little more quickly, as well as eliminate our big numbers on the course. We've got lots to learn and improve on, but luckily there is time before the NCAA's in May.”
In the team standings, No. 1 UCLA (284-286-300-870) held onto first place, despite hitting their highest round of the tournament on Wednesday. No. 4 USC remained in second place (297-291-294-882) and No.34 Pepperdine placed third, five shots behind USC (300-292-295-887).
Freshman Cassy Isagawa (76-70-75-221) jumped up two shots to finish in a tie for 10th in the third- and final-round. Her 4-over 75 was UO's low score of the day for two consecutive days, logging her 11th career round as the Ducks leader.
“Cassy continued her move up the leaderboard by grinding out some pars in her finishing holes,” Scott said.
The Wailkuku, Hawai'i native posted one birdie Wednesday (hole #9), 13 pars (#1-7, 10-12, 15, 17-18), three bogies (#8, 13,16) and one double-bogey (#14).
Also finishing in the top-30, fellow freshman Cali Hipp (73-74-79-226) finished the day at 8-over 79, placing in a tie for 26th.
Rounding out the Duck unit were, junior Cheyenne Hickle (77th, 82-89-78-249), who had her best round of the event on Wednesday at 7-over 78, sophomore Raphaela Dyer (66th-tie, 78-79-82-239), and senior Ashley Edwards (66th-tie, 77-77-85-239).
Other Duck birdie/par counts for Wednesday's round follow: Dyer (2/6), Hipp (2/6), Hickle (2/8), and Edwards (1/5).
On the individual leaderboard, Duke's Lindy Duncan (69-71-70-210) held onto her number one spot, Sophia Popov (74-73-67-214) of Southern Cal jumped 12 spots to second place in the final round, and UCLA's Erynne Lee (72-69-75-216) and Tiffany Lua (71-71-75) finished in third and fourth place, respectively.
