SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The Oregon women's tennis team picked up its second win on the road on Saturday with a 5-2 defeat of UC Santa Barbara.
How It Happened: Oregon's (4-2) No. 2 doubles team of Nicole Long and Marlou Kluiving made quick work of Priscila Garcia and Jaimee Gilbertson, downing the UCSB pair 8-2. The Gauchos then evened things up with a win at the No. 3 spot as Melissa Baker and Luisa Ortiz Candida bested Kadie Hueffner and Lina Åkesson, 8-3.
The win was short lived as the UO combo of Nia Rose and Alyssa Tobita took down UC Santa Barbara's No. 1 pair, April Scatliffe and Natalie Da Silveira, 8-4 to put Oregon on top 1-0.
In singles action, UCSB (3-4) quickly tied things up a one point apiece when Candida defeated Allie Hueffner in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1.
Alyssa Tobita put UO back up with a 6-2, 6-1 dismatling of Da Silveira at the No. 2 slot before Kluiving kept her unbeaten streak in dual play alive with the 6-4, 6-4 win over Baker.
Despite Åkesson's efforts in the second set, the Gauchos would cut the Ducks' lead down to 3-2 after Stacy Yam defeated her 6-4, 7-5.
Moments later, Long would clinch the match for Oregon with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Scatliffefor her third-straight singles victory. Rose followed suit and gave UO the 5-2 victory with a hard fought win at No. 1 singles 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 over Gilbertson.
Odds & Ends: Kluiving, a sophomore from Eext, Netherlands, continued to exert her dominance against UO opponents by winning her seventh-straight match on Friday…She leads the team with a 14-2 mark in singles and is undefeated in dual play (6-0)…The Ducks' freshmen couple of Rose and Tobita are now 17-5 overall and 5-1 in dual play…Rose became the third player for Oregon to have recorded double-digit wins, joining Kluiving and Tobita.
Quotable: “It was a hard fought match against a talented UCSB team. We had to battle the elements. Our team won with character in the adverse situations today and lessons were learned. We have to bring the same relentless attitude tomorrow and see it as an opportunity to solidify our performance from today.” – UO head coach Alison Silverio
