Freshman Battery Keys Win For Ducks
05/03/15 | Baseball
EUGENE, Ore. – Oregon used strong pitching and a four-run second inning to claim a 4-3 win over Stanford on Saturday at PK Park.
How It Happened: Freshman catcher Tim Susnara gave Oregon (27-19, 9-11 Pac-12) an early lead with a bases loaded, two-RBI double down the left field line in the second inning after three straight singles opened the frame. Mark Karaviotis and Jakob Goldfarb followed with sacrifice flies to stake the Ducks to a 4-0 lead.
Oregon starter David Peterson cruised through his first six innings, scattering just four hits, but scuffled in the seventh. After a groundout to lead off the inning, the next two men reached on a walk and a single and first baseman Alex Dunlap brought them home with a three-run home run to left-center field to bring Stanford (19-25, 5-15 Pac-12) within a run at 4-3.
Clinging to a one-run lead, the trio of Cooper Stiles, Stephen Nogosek and Garrett Cleavinger kept the Cardinal scoreless over the final 2.1 innings to give Oregon the victory as well as the series win in game two of the three-game series. Cleavinger tossed a perfect ninth inning to earn his seventh save of the season.
Peterson Delivers Solid Outing: The freshman left-hander earned his team-leading sixth quality start of the season, allowing three runs on six hits over 6.1 innings while walking two and striking out three. It was the second consecutive quality start for Peterson, who allowed three runs over 6.1 innings at USC two weekends ago. Saturday also marked the fourth time this season that Oregon got quality starts from its pitchers in back-to-back games. Cole Irvin accomplished the feat last night with seven innings of three-run ball. Jacob Corn and Jack Karraker earned back-to-back quality starts against New Mexico State and Portland in February and Peterson and Karraker delivered quality starts in consecutive games against both UC Santa Barabara and St. John's.
What It Means: Oregon secured its second straight Pac-12 series win with its fourth straight victory and has now won seven of its last 10. It is the first time this season the Ducks have won back-to-back conference series.
Odds And Ends: After getting six hits through the first three innings, the Ducks were held without a base runner for the remainder of the game … Saturday's game was Oregon's quickest of the season (2:13) … Cleavinger's save was the 11th of his career, tying him with Drew Gagnier for third in program history … Mitchell Tolman started his 156th career game, moving him into fifth in Oregon history.
Up Next: The Ducks will look to complete the three-game sweep of the Cardinal at 12 p.m. on Sunday at PK Park. Trent Paddon (1-3, 6.98) will get the start for the Ducks against Andrew Summerville (4-1, 3.42).
